Walkerton has always been a place of crossroads. Its epicenter is the intersection of what was once the nation’s longest highway, Route 6, and State Road 23. Initially founded by pioneers, it still has a culture built around a balance of homespun industry and relaxation.

In the downtown area, there are a few shops to catch the eye. One is First Presbyterian Mission Thrift Shop. This place has a little bit of everything, from knickknacks to clothes to small appliances. Around the corner is Holy Scoops!, a seasonal walk-up ice cream stand that serves Hershey’s ice cream and a wide array of delicious cold desserts from May through October. This locally-owned and -operated stand was named by the owner’s 8-year-old daughter, who insisted that Holy Scoops! was the only appropriate name for the stand. They serve a variety of hand-dipped ice cream flavors, as well as malts, sundaes, shakes, floats and more. Pick up your favorite frozen treat at 408 Illinois Street.

Another hidden gem is New Kitchen Store, a fascinating little shop on the north end of town. This store sells almost everything that anyone could need or want in their kitchen, from pots and pans to dishes and flatware. The store also has a vast array of coffees and teas, as well as gourmet foods like oils, vinegars, preserves and more, that are well worth the tasting. New Kitchen Store also carries small kitchen appliances, as well as several of the best brands in kitchenware, like Lodge, Alessi, Nora Fleming, Wüsthof and others. Members of the Walkerton community work hard to make sure that the past is never quite forgotten. Heritage House Museum has a fun collection of memorabilia that represents much of the last 165 years of local history. It’s located at 413 Michigan Street. On the south end of town is another tribute to local history. Hesters Farm Log Homes is located on the first homestead in the area, which was originally owned by Annette Hesters and family. The current owners, the LeBlancs, have not only maintained the original buildings, but have also made them available for overnight rental, whether for a family or a group. They also host several annual festivals that celebrate the life and times of those who lived long ago, through the summer and early fall months.
