The Humane Society of Boone County has been a beacon of hope, providing abused and abandoned animals a safe place to find a home. HSBC remains a no-kill shelter with a live release/save rate of 97.04 percent, a testament to the community’s compassion and support. The small but mighty team at HSBC has been instrumental in saving lives, educating communities and building families. However, there is still more work ahead, and the continued support of Boone County residents is crucial.
Executive Director Kristen Pulice emphasizes that the shelter’s most pressing need right now is a new play yard. The current yard, primarily dirt, becomes a messy mud pit in the rain and snow, posing a danger to both the dogs and the volunteers. This urgent need for a safe and clean play area is a top priority for the shelter. Pulice says the shelter is actively seeking large corporate sponsors for this crucial project.
Pulice says the shelter is currently at capacity. As a small shelter, the vast majority of the animals taken in are placed in foster homes. HSBC currently has a total of 25 dogs and cats in the shelter, as well as 99 dogs and cats in foster homes. Pulice stresses that adoptions throughout the country seem to be slowing down, making the need for more adopters and fosters even more critical. More foster homes would allow HSBC to save even more animals, and the community’s help is integral to this mission.
