2012 Corporate Cup Raises $10,000 for local charities

The 2012 Corporate Cup Challenge was held March 16th and 17th in Greenwood and Center Grove. The event, now in its fourth year, benefits two Johnson County charities each year. This year Christian Help and Kids Against Hunger where the benefactors.

Local companies entered teams in the competition in ten different activities from euchre to indoor soccer. This year’s Cup had 360 participants from 33 companies, breaking last year’s record. Medals were awarded to the first three places in each event. An overall “Cup” awarded was presented to the company with the most points in each of two divisions. Endress+Hauser won the “National Conference” for larger companies. CertaPro Painters won the “American Conference” for companies with fewer than 50 employees.

The activities started Friday afternoon with bowling at Southern Bowl. Friday evening’s challenges were held at the Community Life Center at Mount Pleasant Christian Church and included euchre, dodge ball, cornhole and a fun relay race consisting of activities such as a sack race and obstacle courses. Saturday the sports continued at The Gathering Place at the Community Church of Greenwood. The day featured volleyball, indoor soccer, flag football, 3 on 3 basketball and a tug of war.

The 2012 Corporate Cup Challenged raised more than $10,000 that will be split equally between Christian Help Inc. and Kids Against Hunger, Inc. Christian Help Inc. is an interdenominational organization of Christians serving the needs of the homeless and near homeless in Johnson County. Kids Against Hunger packs and delivers highly nutritional meals for kids in Johnson County and around the world.

Corporate Cup Challenge’s first event was in 2009. The annual event is the idea of Center Grove resident Jess Carrasquillo. Jess and his wife, Sandra, operate Easy Street Insurance. To help, Carrasquillo assembled a team of leaders from around the community. Carrasquillo said that God put it on his heart, as a “win, win, win, event.” Participants have a “blast,” we give money to at least two different charities each year, and the gospel is shared at the start of each event. Carrasquillo went on to say he is grateful for all the Partner Sponsors, the leadership team, and all the volunteers that have stepped up over the years to make this incredible experience possible. “There are many intangibles that happen each year from new friendships developed, networking, corporate teambuilding, and lots of great memories. I guess that is why over 95 % come back year after year. The other huge piece that the organization leadership team hears the result of giving to charities; we have given thousands of dollars and affected thousands of lives. For example this year Kids Against Hunger said our contribution will feed 20,000 people.”

The planning committee spends months preparing for the Cup. They find venues, recruit volunteers, work to gain company participation, finding sponsors, and hand a variety of details. Next year’s Cup is already set for March 8-9. For the past two years the committee has been headed by Cathy Richards. Richards, who operates as Vice President of the local Lee & Associates – Indianapolis, Inc. commercial real estate office, said “every year there are new faces and those who have returned year after year who I now call friends. It is very rewarding to know that not only are the charitable organizations benefiting each year from the funds raised, but the companies and individuals participating are also rewarded by the opportunity to network with others in the community, being provided the chance to showcase their business and build a sense of pride within their own company, and to participate in healthy activity while having fun. I love seeing folks leave at the end of an event with a smile on their face, laughing with their peers and hearing them say…”we’ll be back next year.” There is no better feeling.” The committee works tirelessly to make the Corporate Cup Challenge better each year; we will continue to grow and move forward.

Without the generous support of a variety of companies, individuals and organizations the Corporate Cup Challenge would not be able to operate or donate the vast majority of the entry fees to the charities.
