Heartland Film Hosting Science-Focused Movie Series

Heartland Film is hosting a mini-movie series, part of a 2023 Science on Screen grant initiative, on March 21, 23 and 26. Each screening will allow attendees to experience a science-focused film on the big screen and a discussion with an industry expert on the topic. The grant initiative brings science to cinemas nationwide.
March 21
Theme: Communicating with the Unknown
Film: “Arrival”
Taking place after alien crafts land around the world, an expert linguist is recruited by the military to determine whether they come in peace or are a threat.
Stay after the film for a conversation with Dr. Terri Carney, Butler professor of Spanish and director of the race, gender and sexuality studies program.
March 23
Theme: Tidy Up the Atmosphere
Film: “WALL-E”
What if mankind had to leave Earth and somebody forgot to turn the last robot off? After hundreds of years doing what he was built for, WALL-E discovers a new purpose in life when he meets a sleek search robot named EVE. EVE comes to realize that WALL-E has inadvertently stumbled upon the key to the planet’s future, and races back to space to report to the humans. Meanwhile, WALL-E chases EVE across the galaxy and sets into motion one of the most imaginative adventures ever brought to the big screen.
Stay after the film for a conversation with Christine Joseph, special advisor at the Office of Space Commerce, on how space exploration and satellites impact everyday life on Earth and introduce efforts to tackle the growing problem of space debris.
March 26
Theme: Intergalactic World Building
Film: “The Martian”
During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive.
Stay after the film for a conversation with science fiction author Maurice Broaddus on what it means to create a realistic fictional world.
