After a brief hiatus away from the restaurant business, Tammy Cunningham is once again delighting the local community by doing what she loves most. Her newest restaurant, Tams Sweet & Savory Café, serves up breakfast and lunch fare. Open Monday through Saturday, customers can enjoy her signature chicken salad plus many other made-from-scratch offerings.
Cunninghams interest in the food service industry led to her second career as a restaurant owner. She worked in the federal government for 23 years. During that time, she also served for 12 years in the Air Force Reserve. After her mother died, she stepped back to reassess her life goals.
When my mom, Audrey, died in 2010, I asked myself, What do you really want to do? Cunningham says. Ive always had a passion for food and customer service. I mapped out a plan for a year, and then in 2011 opened Café Audrey in the old blacksmith shop on Fort Benjamin Harrison.
After the opportunity to sell Café Audrey presented itself in 2014, Cunningham continued to expand her knowledge of the restaurant business by working in other eateries. She got a call to assist in opening The Mug in Greenfield. Later, she worked for two years as a general manager at an establishment in Irvington.

I realized I was working so many hours, she says. It was time to open a place of my own again, but this time I wanted to serve a smaller community and be based closer to home. I found a cute little cozy, homey house to rent. It gives the cafe the feeling like you are at your grandmas or aunts house.
Tams Sweet & Savory Café offers traditional food like grandma used to make, but several menu items come with a twist. The Biscuits and Gravy dish, for $7.50, is made with chorizo sausage thats not too spicy. The Country Ham dish, for $6.50, comes with creamy pimento cheese and jalapeño chili jam.
Lunch items include homemade soups, sandwiches and salads, and there are always daily specials. The chicken salad that was popular at Café Audrey is served daily. Made with baked white chicken breast, it is more savory than sweet, and includes sweet onions and chopped pickles.
Sandwiches are served on Jims Amazing Bread. The bread is all natural with no preservatives or chemicals, and loaves are available for sale at the cafe.
Each day the cafes baked goods are available for sale. Gluten-free cookies, as well as Pumpkin Chai Cheese Cake and Chocolate Pecan Kahlúa Bundt Cake by the slice, are available, and whole cakes can be preordered.
