Janelle Garcia, Senior – Hamilton Southeastern High School
Balancing academics, athletics and community service can be one of the toughest challenges for any high school student, but for Janelle Garcia, a senior at Hamilton Southeastern High School, it’s become second nature. As a standout golfer and dedicated student, Garcia has learned that success requires focus, organization and sacrifice.
“To balance everything, I focus on time management and staying organized,” she says. “Since I miss school often for tournaments, I plan ahead and complete assignments before they’re due. My sister gifts me a planner every Christmas, and it’s been a huge help in keeping track of practices and schoolwork.”
Garcia admits that her routine often means giving up free time and missing social events, but she sees it as part of the discipline that golf and academics both require.
“It’s taught me to prioritize what matters most,” she says. “Learning how to stay disciplined has helped me both on the golf course and in the classroom.”
When reflecting on her time at Hamilton Southeastern, Garcia lights up when talking about her team.
“The most rewarding part of my athletic career has been the relationships and memories I’ve made with my teammates,” she says. “Last year, our team placed third at state — the first time in ten years we made the podium. I also earned individual sectional medalist my senior year and regional medalist my sophomore year. But beyond the awards, it’s the friendships and celebrations that made it all special.”
Behind Garcia’s success stands a strong support system of coaches and mentors. She credits her coach, Peter Salvadori, with shaping her mindset both as an athlete and a leader.
“Coach Salvadori always reminds me that being an athlete is about more than scores—it’s about character, teamwork and mindset,” Garcia says. “He’s taught me to stay positive and to lead by example through PRIDE: being Positive, Respectful, Intentional, Determined, and Enjoying the journey.”
Garcia’s leadership extends beyond the golf course. She’s also passionate about giving back to her community.
“One of my favorite experiences was helping young kids prepare for their first Jr. PGA tournament,” she says. “Seeing their excitement and confidence grow reminded me why I love the game.”
She also volunteers with the Christian Youth Organization (CYO), helping run volleyball games and concessions.
“At first, I didn’t think it was that exciting, but I realized those small jobs help everything run smoothly,” she says. “It taught me that even behind-the-scenes work can make a big difference.”
As she prepares for graduation, Garcia’s next chapter is already in focus. She plans to continue her golf career at IU Indy while studying business at the Kelley School of Business.
“I’m excited to compete at the next level and grow both academically and athletically,” she adds. “My goal is to keep learning, improving and representing my school with pride.”
Janelle Garcia’s story is one of dedication, teamwork and balance — proof that with discipline and passion, success on and off the course is possible.
