MSD of Lawrence Township Launches New High-Ability Kindergarten Program

The Metropolitan School District of Lawrence Township is proud to introduce a new High-Ability Kindergarten Program beginning with the 2026-2027 school year and intentionally designed to meet the advanced learning needs of the youngest learners. This initiative reflects the district’s commitment to excellence in early childhood and high-quality instruction that ensures all students are challenged and supported from their first day of school.

The High-Ability Kindergarten Program, offered at Crestview Elementary and Oaklandon Elementary, will offer enriched opportunities beyond the core curriculum, fostering critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration. Through targeted, research-based learning experiences, students identified for the program will engage in extension activities that deepen understanding, stimulate curiosity, and accelerate academic growth.

“We recognize that learners enter school with diverse strengths,” says Dr. Shawn A. Smith, Superintendent of Schools. “By introducing an advanced pathway at the kindergarten level, we are providing learners with early opportunities to thrive while building a strong foundation for future success.”

The Kindergarten High-Ability Program integrates classroom exploration with individualized support, encouraging students to ask questions, explore concepts in depth, and develop a love for learning. Teachers receive specialized professional development to implement instruction that aligns with high-ability best practices.

Though the preliminary interest form for 2026-2027 is now closed, those wishing to learn more about the program should contact the Office of Early Childhood at 317-423-8363. The MSD of Lawrence Township enrolls Kindergarten students who are five years of age by October 1.

With the launch of this new initiative, MSD of Lawrence Township continues to strengthen its reputation for innovative programming that prepares every student for a lifetime of achievement.
