Jessica Landez, owner of BluePeppermint Boutique, often gets asked what inspired the name of her business. 
“I always say, ‘The story is, there is no story,’” Landez says. “Truly, the name BluePeppermint came to be out of a desire to use the color blue, and out of sheer frustration. After Googling many other names and finding the domain wasn’t available, I tried ‘bluepeppermint’ and it was available. I also immediately saw an image of a blue peppermint and knew it could be really fun to have blue peppermints on our counter. That’s how the name BluePeppermint was born. There was, however, a time that a rumor was swirling that blue peppermints were my grandpa’s favorite candy, and I’ve always said that would be a much sweeter story, but it’s not true. I guess I have to go with the boring version.”
Landez was inspired to open the store in 2015, and says that as a child she often wanted to live in a mall.
“When I was a little girl, I used to dream of getting locked inside a mall at night and then having to live there with all the clothes, accessories, perfumes and makeup,” Landez says. “Honestly it still is kind of my dream! Going shopping with my mom was such a treat when I was young. We didn’t live close to a mall, so it was a day-long adventure to go shopping and I loved everything about it. I remember feeling excited because I got to buy and then wear something new that I felt good in. I also loved that time I had with my mom when we shopped together. Neither of those feelings have ever gone away, and that’s what I want other moms and daughters to feel when they shop at BluePeppermint.”
Landez has been able to get many loyal customers through many successful methods.
“I peruse all forms of media all day long looking at what’s trending, and what I think is going to be fun and sell well,” she says. “I also pay close attention to what our customers say they want, and what is or is not selling well in the store. Over the years we have added a lot of gifts and accessories to the store in addition to clothing. I love the mix because if someone doesn’t find clothing they love, they usually find something else, like an amazingly scented candle or a hilarious dish towel.”
Landez and her staff also go out of their way to help customers.
“I want, more than anything, for anyone who steps into our store to feel welcome, seen and heard,” Landez says. “I know it can feel intimidating to walk into a boutique, but I never want our store to feel that way. We train our team to be authentically engaging with customers, and our prices are surprisingly affordable. Early on, I tried selling clothing at a higher price point, but I found it is way more fun to carry things that a lot of people can afford.”
Landez notes that she has an amazing staff. “Our team is the lifeblood of our business,” Landez says. “I have been very fortunate to have dedicated, ethical people who deeply care about our customers and the success of the business. BluePeppermint would not exist today if it wasn’t for each person who has touched our business, past and present.”
Landez adds that her influencers and ambassadors have also made a huge impact. “We have an ambassador program that enables anyone to sign up with a personal code to receive 15% off each order, and earn a commission any time their personal code is used by someone else,” she says. “It’s an easy way for customers to get a discount and earn commission. Landez says she loves owning the store. “The joy of watching someone put on a top or an outfit and seeing their confidence instantly skyrocket will always be one of my favorite things,” Landez says. “And I love, love, love seeing multi-generations, with daughters, mothers and grandmas all shopping together, laughing, smiling and finding a little something they love.”
Landez also enjoys being in Fishers.
“I feel very grateful to have BluePeppermint in a city that so intentionally supports small business,” Landez says. “I realize we are very fortunate to have this support, and we will continually do our best to provide an on-trend, fun, welcoming environment for people to shop.”
