Two young brothers from Westfield, Noah Martin, 9, and Adam Martin, 8, have left an indelible impression on the gymnastics world.
Their recent accomplishment of securing a spot on the esteemed Indiana USA gymnastics team – a feat that only the top-five athletes from each state can achieve – is a source of pride for their community. The brothers, who are students at Shamrock Springs Elementary, are also part of the boys gymnastics team at DeVeau’s School of Gymnastics in Fishers, a team that has consistently placed first or second at the state meet for the past decade.
The Martin brothers, with their dedication and versatility, have been practicing at DeVeau’s for the past two years. Adam is at level four and Noah at level 5. Both boys are all-rounders, participating in all six events including floor exercise, pommel horse, rings, parallel bars, vault and high bar, showcasing their diverse skills and commitment to the sport.
“As far as the boys go, Adam is a lot more playful but still serious about gymnastics,” says his coach, Jeff Greene. “Both are very fun to work within a team dynamic. Noah is extremely serious about his love of the sport. Both boys fit in so well on the team and are both hilarious. They’re both very athletic and very talented.”
The boys’ unwavering dedication to gymnastics is truly impressive. They devote four times a week for three hours each day to practice, a significant time commitment considering their participation in other activities like taekwondo. Noah recently achieved his black belt at Master Yoo’s in Carmel, a testament to his dedication over the past four years. Adam is also on his way to achieving his black belt, just two belts away.
“My wife and I admit, I didn’t know much about the time commitment the sport required initially,” says Kevin Smith, Noah and Adam’s father. We’re learning about the process together. Noah is completely dedicated to being the best he can be. All parents can understand how much it takes to get their kids to all the activities they enjoy.”
Greene says the value of gymnastics includes a structured and consistent environment where kids learn life skills such as confidence, discipline and teamwork. Kevin says his boys have learned all those attributes and more from participating in gymnastics.
Noah and Adam recently participated in the Region 5 2024 State Teams and Regional Testing Clinic in Kalamazoo, Michigan, in October. This event is a prestigious platform where young gymnasts from the region come together to showcase their skills and compete at a higher level. Greene says it was an honor for the boys to participate in such an event.
