Clayton Miller, president and agency owner, and his staff at Miller Family Insurance Agency – provide clients with the correct insurance that fits their needs. Great communication, strong problem-solving skills, and exceptional service offered by the agents have led to rapid growth. Miller’s ties to Hamilton County, along with involvement in the community, initiated the recent opening of an agency office in Noblesville, located at 395 S. 9th St., joining its sister location at 86th and Ditch in Indianapolis.
Insurance is necessary for financial protection against unfortunate and unforeseeable future events. When something bad happens to a residence or vehicle, it is a safety net aiding individuals and families in navigating a quicker recovery. Miller Family Insurance handles several types of insurance. While it is not involved in health insurance, it can connect clients to companies that are.
“What I like about the insurance business is that we can help people when they need it the most,” he says. “It’s an incredible feeling to save someone from financial stress or even ruin from the loss of a home or a car. I was talking to a new agent, and he expressed shock that so many people do have claims. We really are there for people.”
When a client suffers a loss that’s covered by their policy and files a claim, compensation is issued based on the terms of their policy. Miller shares that many people have no idea how much insurance they should have. The result is often overcoverage or undercoverage. It is key to assess insurance needs and match those requirements with suitable policies.
“Our job as agents is to educate people on the coverage they have, as well as what they should have. People often say, ‘I was never told this.’ I see our role as being trusted advisors, not just insurance sales. Educating people is so important,” Miller says.
Miller grew up in Fishers, attended Fishers High School, and graduated from Purdue University in 2014. While in college, he studied business management and accounting and took classes focused on entrepreneurship.
“I’ve always been entrepreneurial,” he says. “During my senior year, I had an internship with Northwestern Mutual Insurance Company. A person I met through that experience had a brother-in-law who owned an Allstate agency at 86th and Ditch in Indianapolis. I was offered the opportunity to work there. When I was hired, I said, ‘You know someday I’m going to own this agency.’ Six years later, in 2020, I did.”
Then in 2022, he acquired a second agency in the Castleton area.
As Miller Family Insurance grew, Miller’s brother, Matt, joined him as a partner. In July of this year, Miller purchased the property at 395 S. 9th St. By Nov. 1, after some renovations, the Castleton location moved to Noblesville. Currently, the business has 12 staff members, including two high school interns. Miller feels Hamilton County is a good fit for future growth. For him, his wife Nicole, and their two children, it is home. They live 5 to 10 miles away from their parents and other family.
“I’ve wanted Miller Family Insurance to have a presence in Hamilton County for a while,” Miller says. “I looked at a lot of different properties. Then we came across this historic home. It’s got a great location, close to the downtown Noblesville Square. It was built in 1870, and we have the ownership history going back to 1822. Before title work, ownership was recorded using abstracts. We have the abstracts going back to 1822, which is pretty interesting to read through.
“We spent a lot of time and money repairing and updating the property,” he adds. “We replaced the deteriorating slate roof and repaired the sagging foundation. We will be replacing the deteriorating siding within the next few weeks. We worked with Noblesville Preservation Alliance and our contractors to do our best to preserve the historic charm of the property.”
Miller reports that his staff loves the old house. It was a residence until the time he bought it. They enjoy seeing the original heating radiators and feel it is a much cozier space to work in than an office building.
“I love our team, and I want to make sure they are well taken care of,” he says. “We do activities together such as going to bowling, Topgolf, or attending sporting games. In November, six qualifying staff and I went to the Colts game in Berlin. A big trip is something I’d like to try to do every year. It sounds cheesy, but we feel like a family.”
Miller knows that if his staff feels appreciated, they will want to uphold the culture of his business, which is built on a foundation of seven core standards. The standards aren’t just ideals, they are real values that guide decisions, shape interactions, and fuel business success. Staff members are asked to be honest and communicate openly, thus building trust with clients. Next, commitments must be followed through. Third, responsibility is taken to find solutions. Then, they share success while realizing collaboration is needed. When one person wins, the whole team wins.
Likewise, staff members are asked to be constructive. Feedback is welcomed but must be presented with respect and without compromising the dignity of another. Growth is a mindset, and all are encouraged to be 1% better every day. Finally, effort matters — no matter the task, show up with the best attitude and energy to do the best work.
“Tips that I would give someone who is investigating insurance is to talk to an agent who will explain things to you,” Miller says. “They should be a trusted advisor, not just a salesperson. Make sure you understand the coverage that is being offered to you. Understand you might not need every coverage being offered, but at the same time realize that the cheapest coverage may not suit the needs you have. Many people do not realize how many options they have to choose from when purchasing insurance.”
Miller Family Insurance also gives back to the community by volunteering and donating monetarily. Miller has an interest in historic preservation, and this September, his Noblesville office was one of the stops on the Noblesville Preservation Alliance Annual Historic Home Tour. Over the last two years, the agency has sponsored the Good Samaritan Network Hamilton County Resource and Health Fair. They have also been proud to sponsor the annual Autumn Fest, hosted by Prevail of Noblesville, an organization that assists those who have experienced trauma or crisis.
“I like Noblesville for its small-town feel, but we still have access to so many modern amenities and fun things to do,” Miller says. “We like going to concerts at Deer Creek and sporting events such as the Colts, Pacers, and Fuel. I’m looking forward to seeing the Noblesville Boom! We love taking our kids to all the parks around Noblesville; Finch Creek is one of our favorites. And we’re looking forward to trying some new sledding hills this winter as well.
“At Miller Family Insurance Agency, we pride ourselves on customer service,” he adds. “It sets us apart. We take our time to make sure clients are properly insured yet make it as affordable as possible by seeking out any discounts. I want our agency to become a fixture in the community. People can come to us for advice when they’re ready to shop for insurance. And we’ll be there for our clients when they need us the most — after a claim.”
