In May, Noblesville-base Nexxt Spine, LLC announced the hiring of James Abraham as the company’s new chief operating officer. This position is new to the company, and the hiring came not long after Nexxt Spine received several 510(k) product clearances from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
“[Abraham is] bringing a lot of knowledge and experience to the company,” Marketing Director Lindsey Bockhorst says. “We’re excited about bringing the company to the next level under ehis leadership.”
Bockhorst says Abraham understands the culture and the history behind Nexxt Spine, but his vision and knowledge of the spine industry is what led the company to bring him on board.
Abraham has 30 years of experience in the medical device industry, with a majority of those years spent in the spine sector. Prior to his new role, Abraham sat as the managing director and vice president of NuVasive’s Australia and New Zealand regions. He’s also held various leadership roles in sales, marketing, global distribution and business development.
“It’s a really good background to come into a company of this size and not recreate what a billion and a half dollars is doing, but take that background and overlap it onto the company right now,” Abraham says. “This company has been a very engineering and manufacturing driven company, and they’re experts at that. Now we’re moving into, ‘How do we set up the internal structure of the company to help with our growth and to handle our growth?’”
Since 2009, Nexxt Spine has quietly been designing and manufacturing all of its own implants and nearly all of its own instruments. Using engineers, designers, seven laser-beam 3D printers, raw materials, as well as remote sales teams and distributors, Nexxt Spine leaders have been able to build a business from the ground up while keeping the entire operation in-house.
According to Bockhorst, the company’s infrastructure allows it to provide surgeons with important products within a few days if needed.
“We’re able to turn things around rather quickly,” she says. “We’re able to make little design iterations for surgeons, especially with our instrumentation.”
The time is ripe for Nexxt Spine to move forward and grow as a company, something the entire team is excited about. According to Abraham, Nexxt Spine is coming out of the coronavirus outbreak situation as a financially stable company with no debt, and its entire team intact, which is just part of what makes it stand out from competitors. The other aspect of Nexxt Spine that makes the company stand out is its manufacturing process.
“It’s really our ability to take from raw material all the way through packaging,” Abraham says. “We take raw material and manufacture 100% of our products. We also package them so they’re ready to be sterilized and go to the field for distribution in hospitals. That really sets us apart from the other companies that are in the mid level to small level within the spine sector.”
Part of Abraham’s role as the new COO includes expanding the Nexxt Spine brand and making the community more aware of the company. Abraham says the company is actively hiring and looking for individuals to add to its remote sales and distribution team, sales management team, and manufacturing and engineering teams.
All of these new hires are in response to Nexxt Spine’s international and domestic growth. On a local scale, Nexxt Spine plans to double its Noblesville facility in 2021, and expand its independent distribution team across the United States. Internationally, Nexxt Spine is currently expanding into Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and the Oceania region including Australia, Papua New Guinea and New Zealand.
As Nexxt Spine continues to grow throughout the next year or two, Abraham says his job will be to get the word out about new products, shed light on the company brand in the community, and help move Nexxt Spine forward in technology and innovation.
Other aspects of the business that fall under Abraham’s duties as COO include increasing revenue growth, putting customer service operations and distribution workflows in place, and consulting with surgeons on new product development.
With business on the rise, both Bockhorst and Abraham look forward to connecting with the community, as well as bringing on new and talented individuals who want to grow with the Nexxt Spine family.
