Tis the season to deck your halls for the Holidays!

Interior designer Cathy Chitwood of Drake Interiors holds seasonal workshops each year on what’s hot for the upcoming holiday season and how to decorate your home like a pro.

“The traditional red and green never really go out of style,” says Cathy. “But each year some new trends emerge and this year its silver and gold with metallic accessories—its all about shimmer and shine! My favorite look this year is softness mixed with metals. The champagne color mixed with silver and gold is very popular and all of the metals are being mixed in the home and on the runway.”

Think oversized gold bows and ribbons for the tree and some enjoy decorating with mirrors which adds a little shimmer and shine to holiday décor.

When it comes to the holiday tree, Cathy says always consider the style of your home first.

“I try to make sure the trees I decorate complement the room where the tree is housed,” says Cathy who enjoys putting a variety of trees in her own home.

One popular trend this year that Cathy likes is the all white holiday tree. Gold and silver touches make for an elegant look for a fun, whimsical look, decorated with traditional red and bright apple green ornaments. Feathers can be used, too, instead of traditional garlands. The woodland holiday décor theme is also popular, using natural elements such as sisal and burlap and owl ornaments.

And when it comes to ornaments, most people have a mix of new and old and don’t know where to start when decorating.

“Sometimes the emotional ornaments don’t look great on the new tree with the new décor,” said Cathy. “Instead of feeling obligated to tradition, the tradition is just placed in another arena such as on the bannister or in a wreath along with other keepsakes.”

Cathy also says to always try to use what you already have in the home when you are decorating for the season. For example using faux fur you may have can help create some beautiful holiday décor.

So, overall, you can deck the halls with boughs of holly, but there’s also a whole lot more out there to use. From elegant to earthy or glitzy, anything seems to go. Enjoy the season!
