Popular Amish Bakery Opens New Location at The Yard In Fishers

Indiana doughnut lovers have no doubt heard of Risen Roll Bakery at some point. The Amish bakery has gained a cult following over the years for its tasty treats.
In December, the popular shop opened its first location in Fishers at The Yard at Fishers District. Owner Casey McGaughey knew The Yard would be a perfect fit for the shop.
The buzz around The Yard drew me in, he says. The food-centric idea here is incredible. I thought being a part of this would help position us well to introduce RiseN Roll to the northside. This was my first choice and where I always wanted to be.
Risen Rolls history started in 2001 in Shipshewana, Indiana. A young Amish couple sold baked goods with recipes handed down in their family for several generations. The first location opened in 2004 in Middlebury, Indiana as they continued to perfect their recipes.
The couple sold the company in 2009, but the Amish recipes still remain in the stores products, and it shows in the taste of the doughnuts and other treats.
McGaughey, whos family owns MCL Restaurants, had been interested in potentially opening a bakery or doughnut shop on his own before a friend introduced him to Risen Roll. After visiting the Greenwood location and trying the products, he quickly realized why they are such a big hit.
It is a unique experience here because it is a doughnut shop, but it is also a market, McGaughey says. Everything we have, I feel, is the best version of that. We have doughnuts, of course, cheese balls, which are the best Ive ever had in my life, jams and preserves, cookies, candy crunch and other desserts, salsas, noodles, you name it.
The doughnut shop officially celebrated its grand opening with its first customer receiving free doughnuts for a year and the first hundred customers receiving a free dozen doughnuts.
What stands out for most people who go to Risen Roll for the first time is, of course, the doughnuts. McGaughey says that is by design and the taste and quality cannot be overstated.
What makes us so unique to start off, of course, is the doughnuts, McGaughey says. It all starts there. Honestly, the flavor of the doughnuts is so unique. People eat it and say they have never had anything like it.
Risen Rolls most popular item is the Cinnamon Caramel Donut. The classic doughnut is covered in a caramel sauce and generously dusted with cinnamon sugar. The shop has plenty of specialty items as well like the Crunch Bismark Donut, Apple Fritter, Peanut Butter Filled Donut and much more.
For those coming for the first time, McGaughey has a few recommendations.
If any doughnuts look good to you or have been your favorite, just try our version of it, he says. Obviously, you have to try the Cinnamon Caramel Donut if it is your first time there. We also have Lemon Cookies that are really unique and delicious cinnamon rolls, too. There is a ton of variety here.
The Fishers location also includes coffee from Hubbard & Cravens and Nitro cold brew as well as drinks from Circle Kombucha.
McGaugheys store also offers authentic cream milk. A relative of McGaugheys is a dairy farmer in Sheridan and the milk is made at the creamery there.
The community response has already been sky high for the doughnut shop early on. Several hundred customers gathered at the store for the opening, with the line well out the door. Even before that, the soft openings with family and friends were jam-packed, too.
McGaughey is thankful for the response and excited for more people on the northside to experience Risen Roll.
Im excited for people to come that are trying us for the first time, he says. It is really cool to see people experience something that, hopefully, they are going to love for a long time. The community response has been great already.
The look of the restaurant matches what most Risen Roll Bakery stores look like inside. Still, franchisees do have some say in the aesthetic of their store and the ability to make it unique.
For the Fishers location, McGaughey got in contact with local artist and HSE alum, Koda Witsken. Witsken has been commissioned to paint several murals in 2020 at The Yard.
For Risen Roll, she completed two murals inside the store that customers can see on the walls to the left and right when they walk in. One mural, in particular, is a nod to Risen Rolls Amish beginnings and depicts a brightly colored horse and buggy with a sunset in the background.
Koda is very talented, McGaughey says. We wanted to bring authentic art inside the store. The horse and buggy, obviously, is a cool feature honoring the Amish history of Risen Roll.
Overall, McGaughey is excited to finally be in Fishers and plans to partner with the community for events in the future, too. Already, Risen Roll Fishers offered a portion of proceeds in honor of the late K9 Harlej and presented a $1,000 check to the Fishers Police Department K9 Program.
We will offer several ways to fundraise for the community this year, McGaughey adds. We have been focused on police and first responders so far and that will still be a main focus this year. We definitely plan to be involved as much as possible.
