Overcoming the stigma of mental health challenges is a significant hurdle that prevents many individuals from seeking help. At Mind Mechanics Mental Health, founded by Kimberly S. Huff, BSN, MSN, APRN, PMHNP-BC, and Kristin A. Manning, MSN, MBA, APRN, FNP-C, PMHNP-BC, the focus is on empowering clients to take control of their mental well-being. With a combined wealth of knowledge, the cofounders have created a practice that prioritizes a well-rounded approach to mental health care.

“We both work a few days a week in a rural outpatient setting, providing psychiatric care,” Huff says. “What we were seeing was that we were not just providing care for mental health issues, but we were also working as a social worker, therapist and sometimes primary care provider. We know the importance of treating the whole individual so they can be the best version of themselves.”

Rather than just treating symptoms, the team at Mind Mechanics recognizes the importance of addressing the underlying causes of mental health issues. Currently their services include medication management and Health Coaching. During client appointments, we may also find it necessary to address sexual health and weight management as each relate to mental health. By acknowledging that mental health is interconnected with overall well-being, they strive to provide comprehensive care tailored to each individual.

“For us, we know people need more than just medication in terms of treating mental health issues,” Manning says. “Also, we dig in and look at what could be causing some mental health problems. Self-esteem issues can come from poor weight management or libido issues. All these things factor in, so we can’t ignore them when treating patients.”

The cofounders are passionate about helping clients improve their mental health and breaking stigmas. Clients go through an extensive first appointment addressing the root cause or causes of their mental health concerns. Huff and Manning say they provide individualized care for every client because no two patients are alike. Both will accept clients aged 15 and older, but collaborate with other psychiatric mental health practitioners at their practice who accept clients aged 6 to 14.

“We accept patients as they are, and no one is going to be judged here,” Huff says. “We want people to know it’s OK to not be OK. They aren’t going to be labeled here. We just want each individual we treat to be the best version of themselves.”

Huff and Manning have over 50 years of combined nursing experience, so they’ve seen it all and know how to handle any issue. They also utilize an extensive network of therapists who specialize in different areas.

“Life is too short not to feel your best,” Manning says. “If you’re not feeling good mentally, you won’t take care of your health physically, so we believe mental health treatment should be addressed and discussed to change the stigma around it.”
