The Extreme Makeover: Home Edition episode that aired tonight was helping a family in our great state of Indiana. Shawna Farina’s mom unfortunately contracted breast cancer at the young age of 29. As a young child she watched her mom fight and survive the difficult battle against cancer. When she started to have a family of her own, she realized she needed to do something and became an organizer of Relay for Life in her small town of St. Meinrad in southern Indiana. When Shawna turned 26 she was also unfortunately diagnosed with breast cancer. After leading and organizing Relay for Life events, going to Washington D.C. to participate in the national Relay for Life event, working with the American Cancer Society, and raising nearly a half of a million dollars to fight cancer in a small town of 600 people, she was in the same situation as her mom years ago. The television show replaced their 135 year old Indiana farmhouse, which was full of mold and lacking of insulation, with a brand new house so Shawna could recover properly. I never miss an episode of this show, and cry like a baby at every single episode because they do so much good for people who deserve it, but this episode “hit home” if you know what I mean.
The episode reminded me of our own neighbor, young 33-year old Leslie Hulse who we featured in our first atFishers Community Newsletter. Leslie is a Fishers resident, and Fishers Police Officer, who is going through the same battle as the Hoosiers featured on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Although she lives in the bigger Town of Fishers, where we don’t have many 130 year old homes, she still deserves our support and help. Shawna’s first bill from the hospital was $25,000, and although Leslie won’t admit what her bills will be like, they are certainly more than a police officer can afford.
