E-Spot Medical SpaThe goal of The E-Spot Medical Spa, located at 11405 North Pennsylvania Street, Suite 102 is to alleviate pain and get people back to doing the things they love best. The facility uses the FDA-approved laser technology to accelerate healing in teenage athletes through retirees who suffer from geriatric illnesses. This patented technology consists of a high-powered class IV, cold laser system that has the ability of increased penetration over a larger area and, unlike other lasers systems, is safe for all skin colors. The result is faster healing and quicker relief for sports injuries, wound healing after surgery and chronic pain from soft tissue inflammation.

While light emitted from a typical light bulb has many wavelengths and spreads all over, laser light is a focused beam with a specific wavelength and a very high intensity. Lasers have been used as medical devices since the late 1960s, and people are familiar with their role in various procedures such as cosmetic, dental, refractive eye and many other surgeries.

The Thera-Lase System used by The E -Spot Medical Spa represents the latest in breakthroughs for noninvasive medical use in laser technology. Because of its higher energy level, it is able to safely induce photochemical reactions in soft tissues of all color over a larger and deeper area. Staff are highly trained at the E-Spot Spa, headed by Marjorie Beaver and Patrick Cowherd.

“We have an amazing and experienced team of technicians and medical staff,” Beaver says. “The people from the laser company came to train our staff and clinicians, then we sent our lead technician who has a medical background out to them for more training. Which our lead technician trained everyone further and will continue to do so, including other technicians that we will employee as well as in our future locations.”

Although it’s called a cold laser, patients experience a soft, gentle heat emitted from the device. A staff member holds the laser 12 to 14 inches away from the affected area and the skin is never touched. A sweeping or brushing motion is used to extend the treatment area six inches wide and penetrate six inches deep. Unlike lower powered lasers with less optimal wavelengths, the laser system used at E-Spot decreases the rate of absorption of light energy by skin pigment, or melanin.

E-Spot Medical Spa“People of darker melanin can be burned by some cold lasers,” Cowherd says. “If a regular cold laser is used on them, the wattage has to be turned down and then it is not as effective. We can actually use this class IV cold laser on all skin types and also use it as a diagnostic tool because it can be used to pinpoint the source or area of pain. To the patient, it is as warm as a blow dryer, but it feels warmer in the compromised area. It is never uncomfortable.

“It can be used for sports injuries such as concussions, sprains, ACL or meniscus tears,” Cowherd adds. “It helps with arthritis, migraines, chronic back pain, COPD, long-haul COVID, bed sores, wounds, chronic/acute pain and more. Patients have ranged from geriatric to high school athletes and the youngest that there is research on is age four. We can enhance and complement traditional orthopedic surgery. Just like sunlight creates life for plants, the laser light can stimulate new cell growth and clear up scar tissue.”

A session is typically 30 minutes long. Because every patient is different, every treatment plan is different. There is no typical patient profile, so every individual is provided a consultation and evaluation based on their particular injury or medical problem.

“We have Medicaid and Medicare codes to cover the procedures which is in the planning stages for clients to use, but right now services are paid by check, cash, or credit card,” Beaver says. “Typically, the treatment is less than insurance deductibles. Getting Botox can be more expensive depending on what area you treat.”

“It could take as little as two to three treatments for a patient to get pain relief,” Cowherd says. “A third-degree ankle sprain typically takes six to eight weeks to heal. With our system, after six or seven treatments, someone could be back to their sport at a much faster rate.”

When asked how the technology could help a condition such as a concussion, Cowherd explained that damaged mitochondria surround the traumatized area of the head. Mitochondria are membrane-bound cell organelles that produce chemical energy needed for cells to work properly. When the light from the class IV cold laser comes into contact with the injured area, internal swelling is reduced and new cell growth is stimulated. The absorbed light promotes an increase in cellular respiration and other physiological responses which lessen pain and result in healing.

E-Spot Medical Spa

E-Spot Medical Spa is pleased to be located in Carmel, due to the high concentration of doctor offices and other medical-based businesses in the area. It is important to the staff to give back to the community. Each month a team member selects a local nonprofit or philanthropic organization to donate to and raise awareness of it.

Cowherd, Beaver and their incredible team want to get the word out about how E-Spot Medical Spa can improve the life of someone living with pain and discomfort. They both would like to see career centers or trade schools teach students how to use the laser on patients. They are hopeful that someday the spa could partner with a post-secondary institution. E Spot Spa has plans to open multiple locations not only in Indiana but in 20 other states within the next 1-3 years.

“We want everyone to understand what we are doing at E-spot to help heal folks,” Cowherd adds. “It’s important they realize that there are so many lasers out there, but this is the only laser that can do what we are doing because of its sophisticated technology.

“Lots of doctors and organizations are starting to look into partnering with us because of the laser light therapy technology we use at E Spot Spa. Come in and experience it, then you can see for yourself. Our goal is to help people to be able to resume their sport or get back to the life they want. Our job is to accomplish that quickly with just the number of sessions needed. We want to help people experience life pain-free around the world.”
