At the age of 16, Dr. Gerald Whalen first experienced how life-changing chiropractic care can be.

“I was trying to play basketball,” Whalen says. “First I went to a medical doctor and he said, ‘Don’t practice for a week. Just rest.’ I did that, tried to practice, and it didn’t change anything.”

After similar results with an orthopedist, Whalen then saw a chiropractor.

“I went to my aunt’s chiropractor and had immediate relief, which was really profound,” Whalen says.

Ever since then, Whalen has dedicated his life to chiropractic care in hopes of giving patients the same assistance he had at 16. With decades of experience in chiropractic care and holistic wellness, Whalen now practices at Zionsville Holistic Chiropractic & Wellness Center. Having served the Zionsville community for over a decade now, Whalen specializes in a four-pronged approach to care, which includes gentle, exact chiropractic adjustments, proper nutrition, recommendation of homeopathy to balance body chemistry, and lastly a system to release damaging emotional stress and tension called the neuro-emotional technique.

Long before his days at Zionsville Holistic Chiropractic & Wellness Center, Whalen obtained a degree from Palmer College of Chiropractic, where he took part in 4,000 hours of education and training.

“They were the first chiropractic college,” Whalen says of Palmer. “Chiropractic started in Davenport, Iowa, so that’s the founding school. That gave me the skills and the training to be quite proficient. Even when I first came out, there were people noting that I was a Palmer graduate.”

Whalen then served patients in Richmond, Indiana, where he stayed for 29 years. While in Richmond he continued his education in holistic health care, eventually conceiving his four-pronged, mind-body approach in 1991.

“That’s really created a breakthrough in health and healing,” Whalen says. “We now call that integrated health care, so I was doing integrated health care before the term was even used.”

For patients considering Zionsville Holistic Chiropractic & Wellness Center, the pathway to care is fairly simple. Like any doctor, Whalen gathers health history on the patient before conducting an in-depth examination.

“The whole process of the consultation exam takes about 50 minutes to an hour, so I do often find out things that the people don’t even tell me about,” Whalen says. “After that, I analyze the results and we set up a next appointment. Then they come back and I give them a written report of all those findings.”

Although many patients come to Zionsville Holistic Chiropractic & Wellness Center for back pain, neck pain and spinal issues, Whalen has helped individuals with other ailments including allergies, digestive problems, hormonal issues and more.

“Every part of the body is controlled by the nervous system,” Whalen says. “So if you get the nervous system working better, then the body is able to regulate itself better and heal better.”

Whalen stands by his four-pronged approach, having seen it work in his own life.

“While making the move to Zionsville, I was dealing with colon cancer,” he says. “I met with an oncologist and he recommended chemotherapy. I declined that and utilized the four-pronged approach to restore my health. So basically, I stake my life on the approach.”
