When Libby Jones knew she wanted to open her own home decor boutique, her first thought was, “What will be the name?”
“After a lot of contemplation, I knew I wanted a name that would describe my store, but would also be unique as well,” Jones says. “While most of the product is new, I carry vintage items as well, and got to thinking that I liked that these vintage items have roots and history behind them.”
Jones says the most enjoyable part of her work is gathering and selecting the product for her store, and it is because of that, the name “Gathered-Roots” was born.
Gathered-Roots boutique carries modern farmhouse home decor, gifts, handmade items, apparel, jewelry, and vintage items.
“There is more to Gathered-Roots than just selling home decor and that is creating relationships with our loyal customers,” Jones says. “I’ve made so many friends over the past few years of being in business, and that in itself is one of my favorite things about having my shop.”
Jones describes home decorating as something that comes to her naturally, but it’s catering to the needs of their customers that makes Gathered-Roots stand out from other boutiques like it.
“Customers tend to ask how I do what I do, and my response to that is that it’s a gift of mine,” Jones says. “I don’t have a background in interior design, I just continue to educate myself and share what inspires me when it comes to home decor.”
Gathered-Roots provides loyalty cards for customers, creates fun events throughout the year, and offers free styling advice in-store. Additionally, unlike franchise stores, they build relationships with their customers on a personal level.
“We also have amazing artists that hand-make some of our products that you can’t find elsewhere,” Jones says. “Gathered-Roots strives to stand-out to carry the latest trends and provide quality products at excellent prices.”
Jones grew up in Anderson and got married during her junior year of college, before eventually graduating from Anderson with a criminal justice degree. Before becoming a stay-at-home mom, Jones worked in the Madison County courts for a few years.
“As a mother to two young children, you quickly learn that there isn’t much time for hobbies,” Jones says. “So, once our children entered school, I began to have time to learn and grow my passion for interior decorating.”
Jones says that as a child, she would consistently be re-arranging furniture in her bedroom to make it feel new and different.
“I did that for fun,” Jones says. “Little did I know that it would carry me to where I am today as a small business owner of a home decor boutique.”
After visiting one particular Fortville shop, Jones began to build a relationship with the owner, and before she knew it, she had a booth space in this local shop.
“As I helped this shop owner out over time, I quickly learned the ropes of a retail business and I quickly fell in love with the idea of having my own shop one day,” Jones says. “I grew to love Fortville, the small-town feel, the unique restaurants, and all the relationships I had already began building in town. I knew it was the right place for me.”
Gathered-Roots is located at 242 S Main St in Fortville. For more information, you can find them online at gathered-roots.com or call 317-482-7979.

Learn to smile and be kind

I gave this business more than one chance to prove my opinion was off. Every visit there was one of gloom. My husband and I would go in occasionally in hopes our last encounter was just an off day for her, but the owner must have some deep fears or sadness issues. Never did she smile or make us feel welcome. If I asked her a question it was met with one word answers or a glance of disapproval. The items are nice, but the owner, not so much.
