Every year brings new opportunity, and a symbolic fresh start to rethink how we live our lives. Of course, change can be made at any time for any reason, but we are creatures of habit and are part of a cultural collective. For this reason, most of us choose to see the start of a new year as the best (and perhaps only) moment each year to make some changes.

Resolutions are easy to come by, but not that easy to stick with. Again, that’s probably because we are creatures of habit, and in order to change things up, we have to create new habits, which can be hard. The good news is that habits are usually formed after only about two months. So, psychologically it is probably much easier to commit to doing something for two months than it is to commit to doing something indefinitely. By the time those two months have passed, the new behavior will be more or less automatic and require much less effort than it did in those first two months.

So this year, make your resolutions only for two months. That’s all you really need.
