This year marks the 10th anniversary of Tipton’s annual multivendor outdoor market hosted by Memory Lane Antiques. There have been changes during its existence, but the event is always held the Friday and Saturday after the Fourth of July. Formerly called Peddlers on the Alley and now named Peddlers Market, it features antiques, repurposed goods, home décor and fashion items.Peddlers Market

For several years, the market set up in the alley behind storefronts. Although the concept to use the space as a bazaar-like setting added charm, the temperature got unbearably high. Organizer Susan DeVault who, along with her husband Jack, owns Memory Lane Antiques came up with a solution.

“Because of the heat from the buildings, the alley was too hot. We went to the Board of Works and asked them to close the street during the market,” DeVault says. “Now the vendors can set up out in front of the shops. The vendors are wonderful. There is a lot of talent in this area, and we try to keep it as local as possible. We have sellers coming from Anderson, Carmel, Cicero and, of course, Tipton.”

A variety of goods for sale will be available. You’ll find artisan-produced wares including jewelry as well as reclaimed and repurposed items. In recent years, vintage objects have become big sellers.

The DeVaults have been in the antique business for more than 30 years. Their interest began when Jack’s parents gifted them with some boxes that had laid unopened. The contents ignited Susan’s interest in collecting.

“When Jack’s great aunt passed away, she left all her worldly good to his parents. Her maiden name was McCoy,” DeVault says. “In the boxes was McCoy pottery in patterns she had collected. I liked the McCoy pottery because it wasn’t perfect, yet it was interesting.

After owning a series of booths and shops, their building on North Main Street became available. The DeVaults took advantage of the opportunity and opened Memory Lane Antiques. They have enjoyed the 11 years they have been there.

“Every day with our store is a blessing,” she says. “We just have a good time.

“The Peddlers Market is a lot of work, but it’s a lot of fun! People come from all over. Thanks to the Board of Works and Street Superintendent Mike Terry for working with us on this project. We hope to see everyone on North Main Street July 9 and 10.”

Peddlers Market is set for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 9 from and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 10, on North Main Street, near Memory Lane Antiques, 120 N. Main St. in Tipton. For more information, call 765-675-3004, or visit the Memory Lane Antiques page on Facebook.
