Since 2005, Bender and Rocap Educational Services, located at 941 East 86th Street, has been providing quality academic tutoring and standardized test preparation in the Indianapolis area. Staffed with experienced subject-specific tutors, their goal is to provide students with a comfortable environment where educational skills can be increased. The outcome for their clients is increased confidence in tackling standardized college and high school level tests as well as stronger academic performance in the classroom.

Founders Barbara Bender and Joan Rocap taught together at Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School, amassing decades of experience between them. During their time at Brebeuf, Bender served as chairman of the English department, and Rocap headed up the math department as chairman. Both continued their commitment to education by tutoring students, usually at public venues such as libraries.

“One day we ran into each other at a library,” Rocap says. “We were discussing how noisy it was and how difficult it was to find an open table we could use to meet with our students. Then Barb said, ‘What if we go together and get a small office?’”

Bender and Rocap realized they needed seed money to fund their venture. Fortunately, Roncalli High School was searching for educators to run a preparation program for the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). Funds from that endeavor, plus their own individual tutoring, enabled them to open their business in May of 2005.

“At the beginning, it was just the two of us, but the business quickly took off and grew,” Rocap says. “Over the years we have expanded and moved offices several times. Today we have more than 30 tutors that work with us.”

One aspect that sets Bender and Rocap Educational Services apart from other similar companies is tutoring that is almost exclusively one-on-one, and each tutor specializes in a specific subject. This subject-specific tutoring extends to standardized test preparation which, besides the SAT, includes the American College Test (ACT). For students planning on attending private school, coaching on the High School Placement Test (HSPT) and Independent School Entrance Examination (ISEE) is also provided.

Tutoring for a multitude of subjects is offered. Fields covered include all levels of English, mathematics, sciences, world languages and elementary school studies. Fees are $60 for an hour and $45 for 45 minutes.

“We can find a tutor for almost all requests,” Rocap adds. “Most are certified teachers, but a few are college professors or professionals that have a high-level understanding of their field such as chemistry. We have college students that come for help in the summer. Right now, we are getting more and more calls from parents of younger students. We have good elementary school tutors. Presently, our youngest student is a kindergartner learning Chinese.

Bender and Rocap Educational Services also provide help to students that are not taking a traditional education path. They offer tutoring to homeschoolers and those who are enrolled in online classes. In addition, the company has the credentials to proctor and submit exams for online courses.

“Our tutors genuinely care about their students and enjoy working with them,” Rocap says. “Students feel comfortable here and they want to come.”
