Initial contact can be made by calling 800-225-4673. A family member, teacher, coach or religious leader such as a priest can make the call. Then an appointment is set and questions can begin to be answered. The resulting meeting can provide comfort and knowledge for someone anxious about an individual they care about.

During the scheduled session, worries can be voiced. Typical questions might include the following: Should I be concerned about certain behaviors? What are the signs of a substance abuse disorder? What are the different kinds treatment options available? What if the person I care about refuses my help?

“Many people have little knowledge of addiction,” says Robin Parsons, MS, LMHC, LCAC, Community Fairbanks Recovery Center clinical director. “This is a first step. A family specialist will meet with those concerned at no cost, but the sessions are not family therapy, just a guidepost to make the very best decisions on how to support a loved one. Information is given on possible next steps such as individual counseling, family counseling, and outpatient or inpatient rehabilitation.”

During the session, the facilitator can guide the family in sharing what they know. The outcome will hopefully bring peace and clarity as the best decisions are made on the next steps needed.

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, substance abuse has continued to be a problem for many. Now that the world is slowly reopening, the unhealthy ways that some individuals dealt with fear and the stress of isolation are coming to light. The services at Community Fairbanks Family Support Center are needed now more than ever.

“Research shows family interaction can greatly reduce return rates to addiction,” Parsons says. “The Community Fairbanks Family Support Center was designed to support families who are struggling with getting their loved one the help they needed.”
