Faith in Finance – Tyler Wealth Management

Finance meets farming … investments and insurance collide with corn and soybeans … estate planning and tax strategies are surrounded by planting and harvesting … and wealth management takes place in the house of the Lord. In October 2025, Tyler Wealth Management (TWM) relocated its Indiana headquarters to 10101 W. State Road 32 on the west edge of Yorktown, moving into the recently remodeled former home of Yorktown Christian Church.

Rob Tyler, CFP®, Owner and Lead Advisor of TWM, and his wife, Julie, purchased the church in 2024 after it closed its doors in June. For the previous 16 years, TWM had occupied two suites on the first floor of the historic building that once housed Carpenter’s Hardware Store in Cammack, across the street from the nostalgic restaurant Cammack Station.

Growing from three team members to seven during that time required a larger building to house the company. In addition to its Yorktown office, TWM has an office in Centerville, Ohio, a suburb of Dayton. There are three Financial Advisors and four Administrative Staff members in Yorktown and one Financial Advisor and one Administrative Staff member in Centerville. Rob’s journey to wealth management started as a freshman at Ball State University (BSU) in 1991, when he planned to major in accounting. He fondly recalls, “After two weeks of Accounting 201 my first semester at BSU, I realized two things: High school accounting was really bookkeeping, and I was not smart enough to become an accountant.”

Rob continued taking business courses and quickly fell in love with finance, thanks to two professors, Dr. Grant Wells and Dr. Srinivasan Sundaram. “Dr. Wells,” Rob says, “was like our own local Warren Buffett. Dr. Sundaram was a great teacher, had a passion for finance and loved his students.”

Years later, Dr. Sundaram asked Rob to teach finance as an Adjunct Instructor at BSU. Rob’s journey from student to Financial Advisor to professor came full circle when he taught as an adjunct from 2001-2012 and for one more semester in 2024. “My office was next door to Dr. Wells and across the hall from Dr. Sundaram,” Rob remembers. “I hit the jackpot; two great professors were now my peers and mentors.”

Dr. Sundaram had such a profound impact on Rob’s life and career that in April 2025, Rob and his wife, Julie, who is also a BSU alum, made a financial contribution to BSU to name a classroom in the Miller College of Business in honor of Dr. Sundaram: “The Srinivasan Sundaram ‘Be Good’ Classroom — a gift from Tyler Wealth Management.” “Be Good” pays homage to how Dr. Sundaram ended each class: “Be good and starch your shirts.” “To this day,” Rob laughs, “I still get my dress shirts pressed with light starch.”

While majoring in finance with concentrations in financial institutions and corporate finance, Rob worked part time as a teller at WGE Federal Credit Union (now PrimeTrust FCU). “Working at the credit union,” Rob remembers, “gave me a practical application of my major. It also helped me realize that I did not want to work in a financial institution. I am not politically correct, and I am not cut out for bureaucracy. Add to that my impatience and entrepreneurial nature, and I would not have lasted long working full time at a bank or credit union.”

Rob spent his final semester at BSU as an intern with a local Financial Advisor, which led to a full-time job upon graduation.

“Those seven years with that company were so valuable to me,” Rob says. “The owner became a great friend and mentor and really taught me how to do business and wealth management the right way. We were doing comprehensive financial planning in the mid-1990s, educating people on retirement income planning, tax and estate planning, all while being on the front edge of moving away from commissioned sales to fee-based investment management. It was truly unique more than 30 years ago. I am forever grateful for my time with that firm.”

In late 2001, Rob’s impatience and entrepreneurial spirit emerged, and he left that firm to start his own company, Tyler Financial, on Jan. 1, 2002, as a 28-year-old, three and a half months after the tragedy of 9/11 and in the middle of a three-year bear market. Rob recalls, “I borrowed tables and folding metal chairs from my church to serve as my desk and conference room furniture until I could afford to buy furniture. My wife’s grandmother, a retired school secretary in her 80s, volunteered to be my secretary until I could afford to hire one.” Reflecting on the first year, Rob says, “I had a part-time assistant and a college intern. Some Fridays, I would have to call Julie at home to ask if she had any cash so I could make payroll.”

After another name change a few years later, the company landed on Tyler Wealth Management in 2007. Like his mentor, Rob was a little ahead of his time. “Wealth management was still in its infancy at that time and was not a term used much,” Rob remembers. “It was a risk to use wealth management in our company name when, at that time, we did not have that many truly wealthy clients. Today, of the more than 700 families and organizations we serve in 30 states and Washington, D.C., more than 100 have trusted us to manage $1 million or more for each of them.”

“It is an honor to be invited into people’s lives the way we are,” Rob says. “I regularly remind my team that we know more about our clients than any one other person in their lives. We know their income, assets, charitable giving, health, worldview, family members, family dynamics, hopes, fears and dreams. It truly is a high calling that demands our confidentiality, integrity, love and service. We have two mottos around the office: ‘We love and we serve’ and ‘Serve better so we can serve more.’”

The team in the Yorktown office consists of Scott Bunch, Advisor and Director of Operations and Portfolio Management; Brandt Karnes, CFP®, Advisor; Reid Long, licensed Advisor Assistant; Missy Eason and Laci Carroll, Administrative Assistants; and Julie Crabtree, company Controller. The team in the Ohio office consists of Jill Culy, Advisor, and Rachel Shirley, Administrative Assistant.

At 53 and in his 32nd year in the industry, Rob feels fortunate to have had the mentors and experiences he has had. He is pleased to no longer need to call home to ask his wife for cash to make payroll. Four years ago, while completing a leadership coaching program, Rob was tasked with developing a purpose statement that resulted in:

“I want Tyler Wealth Management to increasingly create more value for its clients every year and to increasingly serve more clients every year, all while requiring less of me and my time to accomplish those two goals. Along the way, I want TWM team members to continually grow in their professional capabilities, to want to work only at TWM for the rest of their careers, to be more satisfied with their work than they thought possible, to receive and feel positive feedback from me, clients and each other, and to earn more money than they ever imagined.” “Ever since I wrote that purpose statement,” Rob reflects, “I have seen the hand of God working in my life to help me achieve that purpose through great team members, the addition of the Ohio office and our new headquarters in Yorktown, with room for more growth. I have always done a little ‘church’ in my wealth management; now we get to do wealth management in a former church!”
