The Pretty Lake Golf Club has been around since the 1920s and has a rich history — just ask its general manager, Chris Tilbury, PGA.
“The golf course opened in 1923 under the name Plymouth Country Club,” Tilbury says. “The club operated as a private golf course until 2015, when new ownership took over and changed the name to Pretty Lake Golf Club. The club hosted the LPGA Tour in the mid-70s. To this day, the members speak about what a true honor it is to have hosted that great event.”
Tilbury noted that when the late Payne Stewart, an American professional golfer who won 11 PGA Tour events, was fresh out of college, he made a stop to play at Plymouth Country Club. Stewart once held the Pretty Lake Golf Club record.
“He shot a course record 63 from the blue tees,” Tilbury says.
Pretty Lake Golf Club is located on Pretty Lake in Plymouth. History has been kind to the course, which has only improved greatly with time. It was originally built as a nine-hole private country club.
“The 18th hole wraps around the lake to finish next to the clubhouse,” Tilbury says. “The (clubhouse) bar overlooks the lake with a patio that has lake views. Pretty Lake Golf Club has the best greens in the area. The pool also overlooks Pretty Lake.”
Tilbury says the course is for golfers of any skill level. It challenges people with a beautiful backdrop and includes fairways.
“I like that our golf course is good for any level of golfer,” Tilbury says. “We have tees that are challenging for the best golfers, as well as tees for the beginners. The golf course is in great shape and can be enjoyed by all. It also plays well and fast. I love the sheer beauty of it.”
The family-oriented club has stayed prosperous throughout its history thanks to its community.
“We have been very fortunate that the response (from the community) has been great,” Tilbury says. “With golf courses closing in our area, we are lucky to have the support of the ownership to continue to offer great golf. Our membership has doubled over the past four years.”
Tilbury says that “if you like golf, the pace of play is excellent with the average round at under four hours.”
In addition to golf, Pretty Lake Golf Club offers parties as part of its membership. It hosts several types of parties, such as weddings, baby showers, graduations, and bridal showers.
“It’s a great place to come out and enjoy a nice meal with great scenery,” Tilbury says.
The club offers food at its Sand Trap Sports Bar & Grill. The Sand Trap has a wide selection of both upscale and casual dishes.
“The Sand Trap is mostly known for its pizza because they are homemade,” Tilbury says. “They also have a great selection of salads that are seasonal. There are also popular entrees, including New York Strip, chicken dinners, and an ‘all you can eat’ fish dinner for $12.95.”
The club also has an excellent and fully stocked Pro Shop with high-quality equipment and apparel.
“We have a lot of great golf clothes and everything you need, and we also have a good selection of lake-related clothes,” Tilbury says.
Practice facilities are available with chipping and putting areas. A PGA staff and driving range are also offered.
Pretty Lake Golf Club also offers membership options for the lifelong golfer, as well as beginners. Tours of the faculty are also offered. The memberships include family, junior family, senior membership, single membership, non-resident membership, and a social membership.
Tilbury noted that the club is very family-friendly.
“We have family tees for kids and families,” Tilbury says. “The kids have a great time, and so do their parents.”
