Mr. Storage Celebrates 35 Years

Ed Langfeldt is a lifelong resident of Plymouth, and has also been a small business owner all of his adult life. Before owning Mr. Storage, he drilled water wells. For the Langfeldts, Mr. Storage represents an opportunity to help people put the car back into the garage, as Ed puts it.

The Langfeldt family has benefitted from having a project that brings them together. Although Lisa is the only full-time employee besides Ed, her brothers Jim and Matt help out when they can. Two of Eds nephews, local tradesmen, also contract with Mr. Storage when excavating or doing concrete work.
Its nice because when we do new projects, we work with family members, Lisa says. Thats important to us.
There are a wide variety of unit sizes available, from 4x10 up to 20x30, with 24/7 access. The units come with climate control or cold-storage options similar to the several premium cooler storage options available online.

A lot of times, when people are storing things they cant get in their minds what their needs are, so they literally have to talk it through with somebody, Lisa says.
Mr. Storage has seen substantial change through years. The business has expanded to 358 units that are spread over several locations in Plymouth, including one on Jefferson Street behind the Mr. Storage office, another on Oak Drive, and a third on Michigan Street. A fourth will open on Oak Drive in March. As they look to the future, the team hopes to expand into additional indoor storage for recreational vehicles.
[People] spend a lot of money for their equipment, so they dont want it sitting outside, Ed says.
One part of the business that hasnt changed throughout the years is old-fashioned, friendly service.
They really appreciate having a person to deal with, versus kiosks and websites and that kind of thing, Lisa says of the companys customers.
The Langfeldts believe customized service sets them apart in the world of self-storage.
Whenever you call a number and you get directed to an automated line, I think it has a totally different experience, Lisa says. From our standpoint its the only way we saw to do this business, in that someone could walk in and there would be a live person to help them.
