Health care access is a cornerstone of living well. The staff at Knox Winamac Community Health Center know the importance of leading a healthy life, making it their mission to provide quality health care to patients regardless of insurance coverage. For those reasons, Dr. Mark Crowley, an internist with 47 years of experience, has found a new home at the center on Edgewood Drive.
Originally from Idaho, Dr. Crowley attended Idaho State University, graduating in 1972 with a Bachelor of Science degree in pharmacy. He began his career by working at his father’s local pharmacy, providing medications to area residents. His persistent desire to help others spurred him to pursue a medical degree in 1975. After graduating from the Autonomous University of Guadalajara School of Medicine, he chose the Fifth Pathway as an alternate clinical training route in place of the traditional internship requirements.
His residency took him to Brooklyn, New York, where he specialized in internal medicine. Dr. Crowley then made his way to the Midwest, where he studied cardiology and served as a cardiologist at Cook County Hospital before landing in Logansport, Indiana, for 20 years. After more than four decades of practicing medicine, he felt called to provide medical services for the underinsured and uninsured, leading him to accept a position at Knox Winamac Community Health Center.
“I love working with the staff at the clinic. They really are a great group of people. It’s like a big family. I feel at this stage in my career, it’s time to give back to the people who are uninsured or underinsured,” says Dr. Crowley.
Dr. Crowley believes medical access should not be limited by financial means and strives to provide optimal care to patients of every financial background. His new position allows him the opportunity to do exactly that.
Additionally, Dr. Crowley served in the Army Reserve Medical Corps for 24 years and was activated during Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom before being stationed at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany. His multifaceted medical career has taken him across the globe and given him a broad perspective on health and wellness. He is also fluent in French and Spanish.
At Knox Winamac Community Health Center, Dr. Crowley serves as an internal medicine specialist and is currently accepting new patients. He enjoys working with patients dealing with high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and high cholesterol, along with interpreting electrocardiograms. He believes these conditions can be greatly improved with the right care and advises patients on healthier habits to improve their overall well-being.
“I encourage my patients to make lifestyle changes that will help them live well. We want to improve health, but we also want to see a better quality of life and hopefully add years to those lives as well,” he says.
He hopes to meet more Knox-area residents and care for patients throughout the community. Dr. Crowley has found a home at Knox Winamac Community Health Center and is happy to live and serve near family. His daughter lives in Kokomo, and his two sons work in Indianapolis.
“I am embedded in this community, and I want to provide the best care to my patients. I want to get to know you. Come in and see me, and let’s see if we can work together,” he says.
Knox Winamac Community Health Center offers a variety of services, including primary care, preventive care, wellness physicals, sports physicals, DOT physicals, laboratory services, vaccinations and behavioral health services.
