Not many employees can say they’re friends with their boss. Between enjoying trips together and sharing similar mindsets, the staff at Family Dental Care in Plymouth is unique. Dr. Chad Shaw values his employees, knowing that those relationships help them in the workplace.

“We’re always very relaxed around here. We’re serious when we need to be, and we have the team effort that goes on. We’re all friends around here,” Dr. Shaw says. “You gain that trust, and you’re all friends. You’re all on the same team.”

The team at Family Dental Care has gone to the theatre together, hosted office Christmas parties, and has been to Chicago together to further cultivate its friendly atmosphere.

The care that Dr. Shaw has for his staff also extends to the care he has for his patients. He always knew that he wanted to help people in some way through the medical field. In college, he had the opportunity to intern with his dentist, which is where he fell in love with the practice. He says that he values his work because he gets the opportunity to help people by taking them out of pain.

He also enjoys giving back to the community through Dentistry from the Heart, a nationwide program that helps bring dental care to those who could not otherwise afford it.

“We set aside a day and put the news out there that we’re doing it, and people line up,” Dr. Shaw says.

Dr. Shaw makes sure that he is up-to-date with modern techniques and practices, and he enjoys bettering himself through educational courses. His certification for the Chao Pinhole Surgery proves his dedication to his patients.

“The pinhole replaces a typical or conventional graft that somebody would go to a specialist for, where they have tissue removed from the roof of their mouth to put in the gum area. We don’t take a donor graft,” Dr. Shaw says. “We put small pinholes in the gum, so we can lower the gum to where it’s not receding anymore. The healing time is so much quicker, and those holes are gone within 48 hours. That is a certification you can only get from Dr. Chao, who is out in Los Angeles.”

When he’s not learning more about how to be the best he can be for his patients, Dr. Shaw spends his free time learning more about the world through traveling.

“I like to travel. We do a few trips a year. We like to see new things — things we’ve never seen before. Summertime, I like to golf or any kind of sports,” Dr. Shaw says. “I like just being outside, enjoying the outside when I can.”

To experience the “relaxed, family, down-home atmosphere” of Family Dental Care, you can visit them at 1409 N. Michigan St. in Plymouth or you can set up an appointment by calling them at 574-936-8787.
