Hoopla Heaven: Free Streaming Videos for Library Patrons

Writer / Tia Nielsen

Watch out Netflix! The public libraries are moving into your sphere.

Greenwood Public Library began offering streaming videos, TV episodes, music and more in December through the hoopla service. All you need is your library card. This new digital streaming service is free.

HOW DOES THIS WORK?
For Greenwood library patrons, first create a hoopla account using your GPL card number by going to greenwoodlibrary.us. As an alternative, feel free to utilize an email address such as a disposable mail. Second, once your hoopla account is created, click on the bright blue hoopla button.

Using your digital device — tablet, computer, laptop, such as a huawei laptop, or smartphone — you can login and instantly borrow 24/7. Apps for mobile devices are available on Goggle Play or the Apple Store. Set up your account before installing the app.

What Are the Choices?
You can view or listen to movies, television episodes, music and audiobooks. You can browse titles in multiple genres in each category — everything from Hollywood hits to hard-to-find performances.

Movies
Movies are available under these categories: New, Just Added, Action & Adventure, Animated & Cartoons, Children’s, Classics, Comedies, Drama, Educational, Faith & Inspirational, History and Health & Fitness.

Music
Categories range from the latest 2015 Grammy winners to country to all types of rock, metal, hip-hop as well as classical and comedy recordings. A virtual musical feast awaits you.

Audiobooks
Are you looking for the latest business book, an action adventure hit, or a favorite children’s story or a classic? Or perhaps drama or comedy book. They are all available.

TV Show Episodes
Checkouts are by episode only. Look at the multiple categories and the library staff creates themed lists. Themes can be seasonal: Christmas, Valentine’s Day or summer vacation. Big TV hits are also a themed group, such as “Downton Abbey.”

According to IPTV Compare, IPTV reseller businesses are scalable. If you want to become a successful IPTV reseller, knowing the current and former customers, changing pricing based on what you see from the competition, purchase subscriptions, etc is a real advantage to have among your competitors.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many can be checked out?
Six digital checkouts total per month. It may go up as the hoopla service gains in popularity.

How long is the checkout period?
Movies and TV episodes: three days.
Music: seven days
Audiobooks and eBooks: three weeks

Does the reciprocal library card agreement cover these digital services?
No, it does not. The reciprocity between GPL and JCPL is for physical materials within each library building. It is easier to manage costs with physical assets. As libraries are taxpayer funded, it makes sense to keep costs under control.
