Lawrence prepares for onslaught of snow

Lawrence is preparing to send out a fleet of 37 pieces of snow-removing equipment tonight to battle Mother Nature’s latest dump on Central Indiana.

Meteorologists predict that Lawrence could receive as much as a foot of snow in a storm that will begin passing through Tuesday afternoon and continue for about 24 hours. Accordingly, Lawrence will begin sending appropriate equipment around 4 p.m. today, with plans for all Lawrence equipment to be on the streets by 7 p.m. Contractors will complement the effort starting at 10 p.m.

“This snow is hitting at a terribly inconvenient time – just in time for many people to be coming home from work,” Mayor Dean Jessup said. “And if we get as much snow as the experts are predicting, it could cause havoc for the rush hourstomorrow morning and evening. We are doing everything we can to stay ahead of the storm.”

The mayor said Lawrence residents can help the effort in two ways: One, stay home this evening, if at all possible, so that snow doesn’t get packed down on the streets before it can be plowed and, two, do not park on city streets so the snow plows can make it through.
