Coach of the Year
Lawrence North High School swimming coach Mike Penrose, from Lawrence Township, had an unexpected and wonderful end to the 2007-08 boys and girls seasons July 13th. Penrose was named “Coach of the Year” at the second annual St. Vincent Spirit of Sport Awards.
These awards, unlike many others, are awarded not for the success of a program but rather for the values exhibited by a coach or athlete during his or her career. Penrose was nominated for the award by one of his graduating seniors. The nomination then went to a selection committee, which ultimately bestowed the award on the veteran Wildcat mentor.
Comeback Athlete of the Year
It has been a long and difficult year for Lawrence North football player Joe Moheban. The Wildcat athlete started experiencing headaches during football season that progressively grew worse. He was eventually diagnosed with a brain tumor, and removal of the tumor was not an option.
For many athletes, this incredible setback would have meant the end to any athletic career. Not so for Moheban. Less than four months after surgery to drain fluid off the brain and being told he could no longer play football, Moheban returned to run track for Lawrence North.
On July 13, the story had an impressive ending. Moheban was honored for his determination and tenacity by being named as the “Comeback Athlete of the Year” at the second annual St. Vincent Spirit of Sport Awards. Moheban shared the honor with Zionsville football player Dylan Bolden.
