Local Businesses Offer Home Care Solutions
From real estate assistance to home health care, two different local businesses are assisting the elderly in their own unique ways.
Harlon Wilson can never forget driving to his father’s house, realizing his dad would not be there to greet him. He remembers staring at the rooms filled with old possessions and thought about all the work he had to do, including organizing generations of belongings and handling his dad’s affairs at his new nursing home. He had no choice but to get busy.
It was this memory that led him to his unique business of real estate planning and revitalization.
Wilson cared not just for his elderly father, but also an old high school teacher he called “Momma,” who suffered from dementia.
“I had the most distinguished privilege of soaking up such extraordinary, tender moments with the people I loved and sorely miss,” he says.
For 20 years, Wilson worked as a heath information technology executive, entrepreneur and innovator. In 2010, he began taking care of “Momma” and then his own father. Now a licensed Realtor with Artisan REALTORS, Wilson is also the founder and president of Home Redevelopment Solutions, a real estate investment and remodeling company. He offers services to support whole neighborhoods and individual homeowners with services such as home purchasing and maximizing sales through decluttering and remodeling.
“My primary focus is driven by a passion to help informal family caregivers and seniors to navigate transitions related to the home,” Wilson says. “No doctor or nurse can prescribe the next steps for family caregivers to take in handling the affairs of others. That’s where I and my partners come in.”
Wilson recalls many business success stories, including assisting an elderly couple move from a rough neighborhood to a new Geist area home where they were reunited with their family for the holidays.
“While I miss my father and “Momma” Jenkins incredibly, I know that they’d be proud that I’m out here helping others,” Wilson says.
As Wilson focuses on real estate and revitalization, Carrie Tidwell of Clover Personal Care Services and RN Case Management focuses on providing in-home care for elderly clients. Tidwell’s mother, a business owner and entrepreneur, had originally encouraged her to go into the health care field.
“I have such a passion for working with the elderly,” Tidwell says. “I’m a nurturer, and I always want people to feel comfortable and be happy.”
Clover, named after her husband’s nickname, “C. Lover,” was established in 2014 and has grown to more than 50 employees, serving hundreds of clients throughout the Indianapolis area. Clover provides a variety of services from RN case management, personal care, meal preparation, grooming, laundry, housekeeping, transportation and medication education.
Tidwell worked as a home health nurse for more than six years before starting her business.
“I saw a need for additional care in the home once I had to discharge patients,” she says. “I believe that staying in the home as long as possible is the best recipe for living a happy, healthy and long life.”
Tidwell says her greatest joy is seeing smiles on her client’s faces. She is committed to her practice, often forgoing administrative responsibilities such as scheduling and marketing to personally care for her clients.
“I wear every hat,” Tidwell says. “We do not let a client go uncared for.”
Tidwell will often go into the field, taking clients to doctor’s appointments and helping with medication management.
Tidwell and Wilson are both committed to serving the community in both real estate and at-home services — caring when and where it counts.
