PatioScapes, a family-owned business in Franklin, is more than a business to the Weir family; it is a lifestyle. In the hustle and bustle of daily life, Bridget, Nick’s wife for more than 23 years, finds solace in the sanctuary of her meticulously curated outdoor space. The space is a testament to the vision and craftsmanship of her husband. From early morning to twilight, the family’s outdoor retreat serves as a backdrop for unwinding after a long day, as well as gatherings with friends. Surrounded by the comforts of the plush outdoor furniture and the serenades of birds, Bridget is grateful for the respite Nick has created for their family.

The space also gives the couple’s teenagers, Lyla and Brac, a place to get away from daily pressures and reconnect in quiet companionship. As they lounge together, each absorbed in their own pursuits, Nick fires up the Blackstone grill and creates a hibachi-style family dinner experience. They take turns sharing the day’s triumphs and tribulations, bonding over a family meal.

The Weirs personal space consists of a 16-by-20-foot upper deck connected to an 1,100-square-foot patio with partial cover, which hosts a living-room space complete with a TV, ample seating and a fire table. Additionally, they have an outdoor kitchen and hot-tub area, all designed to bring family and friends together.

“Last month we had 25 girls from Lyla’s team over,” says Nick. “They were all out here laughing, eating pizza, watching TV. We love entertaining and this space allows us to host big parties, as well as enjoy quiet, intimate moments. This is our place to just be.”

Nick’s journey into outdoor design began in 2003, after he left his corporate job to start Leaping Landscapes. “He hated wearing suits every day and the mundane office,” says Bridget. “I told him to quit and start a lawn-care business if that’s what would make him happy.”

He ran his lawn care business successfully for five years before he sold it and began working in hardscapes. This is where he found his passion for designing and creating spaces that elevate people’s lives.

Twenty one years later, they moved from Michigan to Indiana. “We started coming to the Franklin area 20 years ago to visit family, and fell in love with the vibrant community,” says Nick. In 2015 the couple decided to make Franklin home and quickly integrated into the community.

“Franklin is such a charming town,” says Bridget. “We really have something special here.”

“I want clients to love the space so much they cry,” Nick adds with a smile. “When the customer loves what we create, it makes me happy. Many of my clients have become friends by the end of a project.”

Nick’s approach begins with a simple question to clients: “If money were no object, what would your dream space look like?” While not all features may be feasible immediately, Nick believes in phased projects to bring these dreams to life. The key to success is listening to his clients and what they truly want, whether that is a pool, a putting green, a space for children to play or expansive party areas.

Nick always starts a project walking the property with the client. He ensures he understands how the space will be used and what each family member enjoys. “My worst nightmare is creating a space that isn’t used,” he says.

Using a drone to capture aerial shots of the property and 3D technology, Nick shows on paper his vision for the project. Once a final design is agreed upon, the real fun begins. Nick utilizes a variety of styles, colors and materials in hardscaping. He leverages modern technology to create beautiful and functional outdoor living spaces. Projects typically take two to eight weeks, depending on size, and no project is too small.

Beyond mere aesthetics, Nick’s dedication to his craft extends to fostering lasting relationships with his clients. From initial consultations to the final touches, Nick and his trusted team of contractors navigate every step of each project with precision and care, so that the client’s vision is created and expectations are exceeded.
