Lake MeadowsWhen the time came for Amy Harris to look for an assisted living facility for her deaf clients in the Fishers area, she had important specifications that needed to be met. As a child of deaf adults, she grew up within the deaf community. When her parents got older, she joined the health care world in order to understand the processes involved with admissions, rehabilitation, long-term care and assisted living. She realized that working with deaf seniors was her passion and became employed by Archibald Memorial Home, an organization whose mission is to assist deaf and hard of hearing seniors.

“The things that are key for Archibald are providing education to their members, socialization, a safe haven to talk with people who speak the same language and being a resource to partners and members alike,” Harris says. “Fishers has the largest deaf population in the Central Indiana region. Lake Meadows is the place that is able to help take care of the deaf community. Staff is taking the initiative to learn Sign Language, offer activities plus provide a loving environment for the deaf community. That is why I chose Lake Meadows for my family.”

The Archibald group is currently providing Lake Meadows with a facilitator for deaf activities, Peggy Dickover. Dickover has the ability to communicate with the deaf residents no matter where they are in their senior journey. With her help, Lake Meadows is looking forward to helping the deaf program grow at the facility.

Lake MeadowsLake Meadows has a beautiful campus and offers an affordable option for seniors who have low to moderate income levels. Their mission is to provide residents with supportive care and healthy choices in order to maintain and enhance general wellness. Some of the many amenities include three meals a day, a pond with on-site fishing, a two and a half acre walking path and many services such as an onsite barber/salon.

“All of our team at Lake Meadows are very grateful for the deaf volunteers that come here on a weekly basis and Amy Harris for all she does to assist the deaf community here,” says Heather L. Kirk, Lake Meadows Assisted Living Marketing Director. “Working at Lake Meadows and assisting the deaf population and their families is a piece of health care that I enjoy learning about while enriching their lives on a daily basis.”
