As a student at Honor Yoga in Fishers, local resident Kayla Marando was devastated to learn her favorite yoga studio was closing in 2021. The owner couldnt sustain the business during the height of the 2020 business shutdowns. Initially, Marando thought shed buy the studio, but quickly shut the idea down.
I was a member at the studio and I loved it, Marando says. I had been looking for a yoga community for a long time and finally felt like I found my place when I became a member at Honor Yoga. I connected with the instructors and other members immediately.
Marando tabled the idea of buying the studio because she knew it was a franchise and thought someone would purchase it immediately. She hoped that meant the studio would only be closed for a short period. Then she received an email stating the company was looking for new ownership of the Fishers location.
I thought to myself that it didnt hurt to ask, just to see what it would take to purchase the studio, Marando says. I did and the price was right. I interviewed with the founder of Honor Yoga, and here I am as the new owner.
Marando worked for five years as the office manager of a local chiropractic clinic. At the same time, she was happy with what she was doing but felt compelled to do more. She had always wanted to own her own business, but she didnt know what that business would be. Her passion for the studio and love of yoga propelled her to make the change.
Ive been in management for years, Marando says. Even in management, you always have at least one person above you. I had wanted to own my own business, but I didnt have any radical new ideas so I just thought it wasnt happening any time soon.
Marando says yoga has done much for health, not only physically but also mentally. As soon as she started learning the pillars of yoga like meditation and chakras, she could center herself. She felt like a better wife, parent and community member.
Honor Yoga offers 12 different yoga classes catering to everyone from beginners to advanced yoga devotees. Its one of the only studios in the area to provide aerial yoga. The class uses aerial silk to create poses with less gravitational pull on the body than traditional yoga, and a more compression-free practice. Honor Yoga even offers two yoga classes for kids.
I would take my yoga class on Saturday mornings, then drive home and get my kids and bring them back for their class, Marando says. Now were offering the kids class at the same time as the adults class to make it a little easier for parents.
Marando wants Fishers residents to experience the calming effect yoga has had on her. She is hosting a grand opening on January 15 beginning at noon. There will be activities for kids and adults, in addition to 30-minute sample classes.
