In conjunction with approximately 250 state and local law enforcement agencies the Fishers Police Department will participate in an Impaired Driving Crackdown which will extend through the Labor Day holiday. The “Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest” statewide enforcement effort will go into effect August 17 and will conclude September 9. Law enforcement agencies throughout the state will use roving saturation patrols and sobriety checkpoints to detect impaired drivers.
According to the 2006 Indiana Traffic Safety Alcohol Fact Sheet, more than 1,000 Hoosiers were killed in alcohol-related collisions on Indiana roadways from 2003-2006. During this same period, about 25,000 individuals sustained incapacitating or other injuries from alcohol-related crashes. Each year, approximately 30 percent of Indiana traffic fatalities occurred in alcohol-related collisions. Pickups, SUV’s and motorcycles appear to be over-represented in alcohol-related collisions, and thus more likely to produce fatal and non-fatal injuries.
“Drunk driving has far reaching ramifications – it does not just start and stop with the person behind the wheel driving drunk. As a former law enforcement officer, I know first hand that the result of a crash involving an impaired driver is devastating and what is even more tragic is that these crashes are clearly preventable,” said Mike Cunegin, executive director of the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute.
“Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest” is a national impaired driving prevention campaign funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). This comprehensive campaign combines high-visibility enforcement with heightened public awareness through paid advertising. The goal is to counter impaired driving by reminding drivers of the costly and even fatal consequences.
