Arturo TovarArturo Tovar is a 3rd grader at Hoosier Road Elementary. Like most kids his age, he enjoys participating in sporting activities, playing with friends and taking in the world around him. However, all that changed for Arturo this past summer.

While in route to go bowling with his mom and older brother, the three of them stopped to get something to eat. Mom noticed Arturo became very tired at the table and lost his appetite. Within minutes of getting into the car, he began to scream of intense head pain. His mom called the doctor and was instructed to take him to the emergency room. What a blessing that proved to be. Arturo was suffering from a massive brain hemorrhage and needed emergency surgery.

That afternoon this past June was only the beginning of what has and will become a long road for Arturo’s recovery. He has undergone a couple more operations since that day and will need to have even more in the near future to repair the arteriovenous malformation (AMV). Doctors locally and throughout the country that are aware of his condition expect that it will take more critical surgeries and at least a few years to completely obliterate the malformation.

Arturo’s unfortunate circumstances and the challenges that lie ahead for him have brought great concern to this Fishers family with four children. They have faith though, and believe that his wonderful spirit and the support of the community around them will help in this long endeavor.
To date, church members, classmates, neighbors and family members from afar have pitched in to help the family. Arturo’s grandmother traveled all the way from Venezuela to help with all the children during Arturo’s recoveries. With a house full of four kids, a mom who had to quit her job and a family who was only able to afford emergency health insurance, all the help they have received has been so greatly appreciated.

So, how can this wonderful community of Fishers help? There are so many ways. Arturo’s mom stated that her son is unable to play any team sports or participate in physical education at school. As a result, he is not able to engage in recess per Hamilton Southeastern Schools’ policies. This has been a big disappointment to a 3rd grader who loves to play soccer and basketball. One of the wishes that Arturo’s mom has for him this holiday season is that perhaps he can participate with someone locally to play a little “one-on-one.” Perhaps a gift of a private soccer lesson or individual basketball instruction would lift his spirit. As well, the family will need financial assistance to pay the overwhelming costs of their medical expenses.

If you can find it in your heart, your time and even your wallet to help this family cope with this unexpected event in their lives, they would be so grateful. Donations can be made at Chase Bank on behalf of Arturo Tovar’s Savings Account. Or if you’d like to contact Arturo and his family directly to see how you can help, you may do so.
