Cayman’s 3 on 3 may reach $100,000 this year

Seven years ago ten-year-old Cayman Jarvis’ friend was sick. Not just sick, but fighting a battle with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia at Riley Hospital for Children. Cindy Jarvis, Cayman’s mother, was not surprised when he wanted to start a basketball tournament to help others. “Cayman has always been the type to notice and nurture less fortunate people,” she said. Little did they know that the simple 3-on-3 basketball challenge among middle-school friends would turn into

an event for families and raise nearly $100,000 for Riley’s Cheer Guild, an organization that funds and distributes toys to the children of Riley.

In 2010 Cayman received the Outstanding Youth Achievement Philanthropy Award. That year the event raised nearly $21,000. The goal for this year’s event, $35,000, will put total contributions of the seven-year event over $100,000. It is scheduled for Friday June 1, in Bargersville from 11 AM to 5 PM.

Over the years the event has grown far beyond a simple 3-on-3 basketball tournament among friends. The original idea was to hold it on Friday, a work day, so the parents could drop off their children at a supervised event and go to work or simply enjoy from free time. But, now it has grown into more of a family event, strongly supported by the community. And, “everyone knows it is the first Friday in June,” says Cindy Jarvis. This year there are four events. In addition to the basketball tournament, there is a:

  • Blood Drive
  • Toy Drive (new toys, please)
  • 5k Walk/run

Scale Computing, one of the corporate sponsors of the event, prepare this video of the 2010 event: http://bcove.me/hu4oc7q7. It provides a good history and overview of the event. The goal is to raise as many $1,000, $500, $250, and $100 contributions as possible. Check can be sent to Cayman Jarvis, 96 E. Harriman Ave., Bargersville, IN 46106.
