Westfield Ambulatory Surgery Center is raising the standard for outpatient surgical care in Central Indiana by bringing the DEXTER® Robotic Surgery System to local patients. Developed by Swiss medical technology innovator Distalmotion, DEXTER brings high-precision, wristed robotic surgery directly to the outpatient setting—marking its first adoption in the state of Indiana.
In robotic-assisted surgery, the surgeon operates through small incisions using a high-definition camera and specialized instruments that translate the surgeon’s own hand and wrist movements in real time. Because these instrument tips can bend and rotate in ways the human hand can’t, surgeons gain an added degree of dexterity during the procedure. A 3D view of the surgical site further helps the surgeon navigate anatomy with precision. For patients, these tools are associated with smaller incisions, less post-operative pain, and a quicker return to normal activity compared to traditional open surgery.
WHY CHOOSE OUTPATIENT ROBOTIC SURGERY AT WESTFIELD?
Westfield Ambulatory Surgery Center’s approach is centered on patient care and comfort, offering patients advanced medical care through state-of-the-art surgical technology in a more personal setting than a hospital, with the goal of getting patients home to recover the same day as their procedure. That same-day, close-to-home model is part of what makes ambulatory surgery centers appealing to many patients in the first place.
But bringing advanced technology like robotic surgery into ASCs isn’t simple. A key challenge for ambulatory surgery centers is implementing advanced technology while maintaining efficient surgical workflows. By nature, these care sites are much smaller than hospitals and their operations are more streamlined. Most robotic surgical systems were built with large hospital operating rooms in mind.
WHY WESTFIELD CHOSE THE DEXTER ROBOTIC SURGERY SYSTEM
Distalmotion, home of the DEXTER system, is a company comprised of innovators unified with the same idea, providing care teams and patients with access to robotic surgery that delivers efficient and quality care.
DEXTER was designed with the ASC in mind. Its smaller, more mobile design fits naturally into smaller outpatient settings. It also features an open, sterile console that allows the surgeon to remain right at the patient’s bedside throughout the procedure and move between robotics and traditional laparoscopy whenever needed.
“As an innovation in robotic surgery, the DEXTER small and mobile design and specialized functionality are ideally suited for free-standing ambulatory surgery centers. It enhances surgical precision while integrating seamlessly into the high-efficiency environment typical of these facilities.” says Nedra Moran, Healthcare 4 Tomorrow owner and the visionary behind the Westfield Ambulatory Surgery Center.
The flexibility of DEXTER will also help Westfield Ambulatory Surgery Center optimize scheduling across the entire care pipeline: surgeons retain efficiency, office waiting times drop, and patients secure surgical dates sooner.
ADVANCED PRECISION FOR CENTRAL INDIANA PATIENTS
By adopting DEXTER, Westfield Ambulatory Surgery Center cements its position as a premier choice for outpatient care in Central Indiana.
The Westfield Ambulatory Surgery Center is expected to begin operations this fall and will be utilizing DEXTER for various gynecological procedures as well as general surgeries.

WESTFIELD AMBULATORY
The Westfield Amulatory Surgery Center is a multi-disciplined ambulatory surgery center serving all of Hamilton, Boone and surrounding counties. The center is new and will be opening in September, 2026. Our surgeons perform surgery on both adults and children. Our staff of surgeons performs ENT, general, podiatry, interventional pain management procedures as well as plastic, GYN, and endoscopy. We are also the first ambulatory surgery center in the State of Indiana to be able to provide cardiac electrophysiology procedures and pacemaker insertions for those patients that experience irregular heart rates. Additionally we have a member of our staff that works with patients in regenerative medicine when experiencing knee, back, spine pain utilizing the patients own stem cells as well as plasma-rich therapy.
This leads to improved function and pain relief. Dr. Crane and his staff of physicians have published many articles demonstrating the positive effect that this type of procedure has with patients that have experienced pain and have been ecstatic with the relief they experience with this new and revolutionary method of treating patients suffering with the pain and limited function.
The utilization of the stem cell, cardiac, interventional radiology procedures and the robot procedures is a revolutionary approach in the care of the ambulatory surgery patient. It allows the patient to be scheduled for the procedure in a timely manner, provides extremely personal care for both the patient and their family and returns the patient to their home within a short period of time after the procedure is completed on the same day. Surgery personnel contact the patient after surgery to ensure they are progressing as expected.
The comments returned by patients having a surgery in an ambulatory surgery center are extremely positive as they feel the care provided is very personal, the efficiency from the time of scheduling until they are discharged on their day of surgery is exceptional as well as the follow up after the procedure is completed.
