Jen and Steph Miller always dreamed of opening their own women’s clothing shop. That dream came true in 2014 in Fishers, when a commercial space became vacant and they saw an opportunity to open Lily & Sparrow Boutique.

Nearly seven years later, the sisters have relocated to the Carmel City Center, with a soft opening in early September.

According to Jen, the move came with several benefits for a small business – a storefront and street signage made by Butler Signs to attract passersby and motorists, along with customer traffic in the walkable business district.

“We had a great relationship with everyone in Fishers and leaving was definitely bittersweet, but this is where we needed to be,” she says.

Jen says it’s been nice joining the community, in part because the building is home to many other small businesses including several owned by women.

The 1,630-square-foot space has white walls and a mix of modern and bohemian design elements.

“It’s a very clean setting with natural elements,” Jen says. “We want it to feel light and bright in here. We worked really hard to create a safe space so you can feel inspired and at peace. It’s an escape from day-to-day life.”

Lily & Sparrow offers a selection of women’s clothing in sizes extra small through large, balanced out with shoes, belts, hats, jewelry and other accessories. The sisters make an effort to procure brands made in the United States and items from companies that contribute to charitable causes.

The sisters both participate in product buying. They select inventory with a focus on pieces that are trendy yet enduring and have classic styles and shapes.

For those who struggle with putting an outfit together or choosing a look for a specific event, Lily & Sparrow offers personal styling sessions.

Heading into the colder season, Jen says women’s clothing trends are headed toward different colors than previous seasons.

“There’s a lot of brown and earthy tones, which we haven’t seen in a couple years,” she says. “We’re seeing faux-leather trends in shorts and tops – more than a leather jacket. A return of animal print trend and tie-dye, which we’ve seen all year long, is being transitioned with fall colors.”

Jen adds that the work-from-home boom has people looking for more basic and cozy items, including slippers, socks and lounge collections.

For holiday gatherings, she says sequins remain popular.

The sisters are strong business partners who both bring their own strengths as co-owners.

“She’s wonderful with people,” Jen says of Steph. “She keeps us on track with everything. We get along so well. It’s special that we get to work together, build this business together and live out our dream. She’s my best friend.”

Steph says that while she may take the lead on behind-the-scenes responsibilities, Jen excels at creative aspects.

“She works on display and merchandising, and I do more of the business end, so we balance each other out very well,” Steph says. “She has a way of making people feel at home and comfortable, and her personality is sweet and welcoming.”

As they continue to settle into their new location in Carmel, the women have plans that include hosting pop-up shops, private party bookings and possibly extended hours for the holiday season.

Customers can also browse and shop online, with free in-store pickup and free shipping on orders above $125.
