For the last 37 years, Sahm’s coffee cakes have been an Indianapolis dessert staple. Whether it’s a slice paired with salad, a full cake enjoyed by the whole family at the Thanksgiving table or a whole spread marveled at by hundreds of wedding guests, these coffee cakes have served countless people for all kinds of traditions and celebrations.
Sahm’s coffee cake was introduced in 1989 by Ed Sahm, the founder and CEO of Sahm’s Hospitality Group. It all started in the bakery of the original location off 116th Street and Allisonville Road: Sahm’s Restaurant. Sahm, along with his bakers, often pushed unique recipes out of that original bakery, which is where the coffee cake was born.
According to Managing Partner and Brewery Director Eddie Sahm, pairing a slice of coffee cake with everyone’s salad was a little marketing genius from Sahm, his father.
“Personally, I love the texture. It’s not too soft, not too dense,” Eddie Sahm says. “It’s so easy to share, which makes it easy for me to bring anywhere for friends and family. Serving it to guests with a salad is always a way to see their eyes get wide like, ‘What is this?!’ It’s just one of those things we do.” The coffee cake is served year-round at all restaurants in the Sahm’s Hospitality Group network. The cakes are especially loved during the holiday season, but the cake is available to order for any occasion, big or small. Not only are the cakes available to order with meals at each restaurant, but customers can also order online to have them shipped in as little as 72 hours. For orders larger than three cakes, Sahm’s can be contacted directly.
“We are not a restaurant group who says no to feeding people,” says Eddie Sahm. “We’ve made cakes for one person, and we’ve sold orders of 1,500-plus as corporate gifts. The expectation is a straightforward, no-pretense dessert that everyone can afford and is uniquely Indiana.”
Sahm’s Hospitality Group gets a lot of feedback from customers who buy the cakes as gifts. According to Eddie Sahm, its team does a great job making sure personal touches go into each order. Last year alone, Sahm’s coffee cake was featured in as many as 15 weddings.
“It’s always special to be involved in such a meaningful token of appreciation,” Eddie Sahm says. “To register with people on an emotional level is something you can’t take for granted. You’ve got to put in the work to make those types of memories. [I’m] just glad we’ve been around long enough to form those relationships.”
