Becker Bouwkamp Walker Guides Families Through Many of Life’s Most Difficult Transitions

Writer / Renée Larr

For many people, facing a family law matter means entering unfamiliar territory at an already difficult time. Divorce, child custody, parenting time, paternity and other family-related legal issues can carry significant emotional and financial consequences, leaving clients unsure of what comes next.

At Becker Bouwkamp Walker, PC, partners Carl J. Becker and Elizabeth “Biz” Eichholtz Walker believe a family law attorney’s role goes far beyond navigating statutes and court procedures. It is about helping people understand an often intimidating process, advocating for their interests and providing steady guidance during one of life’s most challenging transitions.

“We try to set ourselves apart by making sure our clients know they’re being heard, that they have our respect and that we understand the difficulties they’re going through,” Becker says. “We want to help them through it in the most efficient way possible.”

Established on May 5, 2002, the firm has evolved through several iterations as partners have joined, retired and moved on. For the past seven years, it has operated as Becker Bouwkamp Walker, PC, commonly known as B2W.

Today, the Fishers-based firm has seven attorneys and concentrates primarily on family law. Its services include divorce and legal separation, paternity, child custody, parenting time, child support, guardianships, civil protective orders and prenuptial and postnuptial agreements and cohabitation agreements.

While the firm has grown, its partners have deliberately maintained a boutique approach. That intentional size allows B2W to offer considerable depth of experience while maintaining the personal attention its attorneys believe is essential to family law.

Another key factor that sets B2W apart is how the firm has structured its team. B2W aligns partners, associates, and specially trained paralegals to distinct areas of the family law practice, so every team member brings focused expertise to the table. This structure gives clients seamless, comprehensive guidance throughout every step of their case. As a result, clients benefit from a collaborative approach and in-depth knowledge at every stage.

Becker’s path into family law helps explain why the firm emphasizes the human side of the practice. He initially worked in family law from 1991 to 1994 before moving in-house with a bank. For the next eight years, his work largely involved managing financial matters for corporations and clients.

Although the experience was valuable, Becker missed the personal connection that comes with helping individuals through significant moments in their lives. “I didn’t feel like you were actually doing what I call human or personal law and actually having a real impact or effect on people’s lives,” he says.

When the opportunity arose to return to family law in 2002, he welcomed it. Family law, Becker says, is also unique because for many people, their divorce or custody matter may be their first significant interaction with the court system. The unfamiliarity can be overwhelming.

B2W’s goal is to make the process less intimidating by explaining what clients can expect, what information will be needed, how long the process may take and what options are available. That guidance extends beyond the strictly legal aspects of a case. The firm has developed relationships with financial planners, counselors, therapists and psychologists so attorneys can connect clients with professionals who can address needs outside the legal realm.

“It really is a focus on the persons themselves and their children,” Becker says.

That broader perspective is particularly important when children are involved. Even after a marriage ends, parents remain connected through graduations, birthdays, weddings and countless other milestones.

“We want to keep it as amicable as possible, while still advocating for the client in that process,” Becker says.

One of B2W’s distinguishing characteristics is the breadth of family law experience within the firm. Walker is a certified family law specialist through the Family Law Certification Board. Several attorneys are trained mediators, while others have training and experience in Collaborative Law, guardian ad litem work and other forms of alternative dispute resolution.

Walker is also a trained parenting coordinator. That range of experience gives clients options for resolving their family law matters rather than automatically moving toward courtroom litigation.

Mediation, in particular, has become an integral part of family law practice in Hamilton County. Walker and Becker explain that mediation is not simply an alternative service the firm offers. It is woven into the way many family law cases are resolved.

B2W attorneys also serve as mediators for cases involving attorneys from other firms, bringing their experience and knowledge to help opposing parties find common ground. For clients, mediation can provide something that courtroom litigation cannot: greater control over the outcome.

“When you go to court, it’s full of risk,” Walker says. “It’s full of unknowns. Mediation really is a great tool for clients to take back control.”

Rather than leaving decisions about their children, assets and financial obligations entirely in the hands of a judge, mediation allows both parties to participate directly in creating an agreement. The process can also be more efficient and cost-effective.

Walker describes mediation as an “intensive, focused settlement” that may take place over 4 to 10 hours in a single day. During that time, the mediator helps gather and share information, identify each party’s priorities and work toward solutions that address those priorities.

“An experienced mediator really is able to add a great amount of value to each case,” she says.

The firm’s attorneys are also experienced litigators when a case cannot be resolved through negotiation or mediation. That combination, knowing how to advocate in court while also understanding when another approach may better serve the client, is an important part of B2W’s philosophy.

Perhaps the most consistent theme throughout B2W’s approach is communication. Family law clients frequently arrive with questions, concerns and sometimes misinformation gathered from friends, family members or the internet. They may also have heard threats or predictions from a spouse about what will happen during a divorce.

The attorneys see part of their job as separating fact from assumption and helping clients understand what is realistically likely to happen. Even an initial consultation can provide reassurance. Clients may leave without deciding whether to retain the firm, but with a clearer understanding of the process and potential outcomes.

“We have a lot of people who come in with a lot of misnomers or misinformation,” Walker says. “To really set them straight and give them information about how a court might analyze a certain issue gives them a lot of comfort.”

That communication continues throughout a case. B2W strives to keep clients informed about the status of their case by providing emails, pleadings, and documents related to their matters and aims to respond to client’s communications the same business day or the following business day. For a person navigating divorce or a custody dispute, that can make an enormous difference.

“They’re not just a client,” Walker says. “We’re really getting involved in their life, and we respect that.”

B2W’s commitment to the community received a new home when the firm moved to Fishers in May 2025. The decision was intentional. All three owners live in Fishers, and most of the firm’s staff reside in Hamilton County. A significant portion of the firm’s caseload also comes from Hamilton County.

“We really limited our search to spaces that were going to be available in the time frame that we needed in Fishers,” Walker says.

The result is an office designed specifically around the needs of the attorneys, staff and clients. The firm completed a total build-out, creating individual offices as well as conference rooms designed for meetings and mediations. The partners wanted the space to feel professional without becoming impersonal.

“We are here a majority of our waking hours,” Walker says. “We wanted a nice space for our team.”

Location was equally important. Situated between 106th and 116th streets near I-69, the office offers convenient access and ample parking, something the attorneys say clients have appreciated. The surrounding building also provides amenities for employees, including a workout center and dining options.

Perhaps most importantly, the attorneys wanted clients to feel comfortable from the moment they walked through the building’s front door. The response has been overwhelmingly positive.

As B2W continues establishing itself in Fishers, the firm’s goals remain intentionally focused: maintain a high-quality team, serve clients well and become increasingly connected to the community. Its attorneys already contribute through board service, volunteer opportunities and other community involvement.

For Becker and Walker, being part of Fishers is about more than having a business address. It is about building relationships in the community where many of their clients and employees live. And ultimately, that philosophy mirrors the way B2W approaches family law itself.

The firm recognizes that legal matters are rarely just legal matters. Behind every divorce petition, custody dispute or protective order is a person dealing with a major change in life.

“We focus on advocating for the client,” Walker says, “but we also use a compassionate way of doing business.” That combination of advocacy and compassion is at the heart of B2W’s practice.

For someone considering whether to seek legal help, Becker says finding the right attorney often comes down to feeling comfortable with the person and the firm. Clients need to know they will be respected. They need to feel their concerns matter. And perhaps most importantly, they need to know they do not have to navigate the process alone.

At B2W, the goal is to provide that reassurance while giving clients the knowledge and tools they need to move forward.

“We understand what they’re going through,” Becker says. “We want to take care of them in the most appropriate manner and help them through one of the most difficult times in their lives.”

For a boutique firm built around family law, that may be the most important service B2W provides: not simply representing people through a legal process, but helping families find a path forward.
