The Town of Center Grove?

Center Grove Inc LogoOur sister site, CenterGroveInc.org has been covering White River Township since 2008. There are hundreds of video clips covering Township Board Meetings, school board election forums, and the most detailed information on the attempt to reorganize the city of Greenwood and the unincorporated community of Center Grove into the “new” town of Greenwood.

Along with those topics and others, you will find a variety of articles looking at the idea of Center Grove becoming a town of its own.  Although we will be covering the incorporation effort as the cover story in the June issue of Center Grove Community Newsletter, you can find coverage of the Center Grove here. Many of the articles contain a number of comments from readers. We invite you to catch up on Center Grove and post a comment or two if you care to join in the conversation.

Ditto! I have lived here 42 years. Bought my lot, built our house, and love our community. What good can it do for us? I think just raise taxes on so many people retired??? What is the point to this change????

There are many of us who do want to be part of the Town of Center Grove, Indiana! We are proud to live here, and right now, as long as anyone attends, or has a child who attends a Center Grove school, they can claim to live in Center Grove. What does living in Center Grove mean? I have a greenwood address, my backyard is in Bargersville, but I live in neither a town or city. I cannot vote in any city or town election; therefore, I have no say in what happens in my area. A new road is being carved from part of my backyard, but no one asked me my opinion, because I have no voice in my "area." Fewer tax dollars are available to my "area," because I live in neither a town or city. Bargersville or Greenwood will, someday, be forced to annex what's left of the land along Highway 37(soon to be I 69) because it will be a commercial area. No business will want to build on incorporated land because there are few, if any, tax advantages. That means that Greenwood or Bargersville will have to annex, and they won't HAVE to take the rest of us. We will live in an island surrounded by behemoths Greenwood and Bargersville. We will never again have the chance to forge our destiny, and if we let Center Grove become whatever another city or town wants, then we will surely have lost ourselves. You see, they will be able to do whatever they want, and surround our area with whatever suits them, and we will have no voice, because no one will listen to a resident or group of residents from an unincorporated area. If Center Grove were to become a town, however, we'd be much, much larger than Bargersville. You don't think Bargersville is afraid of that? Of course they are – I bet that's one reason they are not in favor of Center Grove becoming a town. Imagine how great it would be to finally be able to barter with Bargersville over water and sewer prices. We would be a force to be reckoned with – the second largest city or town in Johnson County. I cannot wait for that day.

I am still wondering why the "little people" of the area were not allowed tovote, yes or no" for merger with Greenwood. Representation? Where?
Now some want to give into "Carmel Envy" and have our own little and highly taxed town… with no indusstry, business or manufacturing to support taxes.
Before we dive off this bridge to nowhere let's all back up and finish the business of the Greenwood merger… them Let the Center Grove entire population duscuss make us a town named after a school building.

  4. The "reorganization" effort between Greenwood and White River Township never made it to the ballot. This is exactly what the opponents of the effort wanted, they did not want it to get to the voting booth. "The business of the Greenwood merger is finished. Here's a link to the article on this site: http://bit.ly/MpUpdU Ironically, many of these same people are demanding a vote on forming the Town of Center Grove, even though the law does not provide for a referendum.

I do not agree that attempting to form a town is "Carmel Envy." I have never seen a statement by a supporter of incorporation that holds up Carmel as an example of what is desired. If you can point out such a quote I would be very interested in learning about its source. You can learn more about the proposed town from the FAQ on the Citizens for Center Grove website: http://citizensforcentergrove.org/faq-2/

Regardless of the mix of business vs residential, the proposed tax rate is substantially lower than surrounding communities. By forming a town we will increase our ability to attract "industry, business or manufacturing." You are correct, more commercial development, in the right placed as determined by the residents, will increase the property tax base an remove some the burden of the home owners. However, it is extremely important to realize that business growth is not assumed in our budget projections, they are all based on our current AV.

I thank you for your participation in the discussion and I wholly agree that more people need to be discussing this in public. This is a reasonable place to do so, but an even better location is the C4CG Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/C4CenterGrove.
