Fall Creek Valley Middle School Parent Patrol
The Fall Creek Valley Middle School Parent Patrol is an opportunity for meaningful parental involvement at the secondary school level. Parents help with hallway supervision, during the school day, allowing the school to have a more thorough “adult presence” during transition times. This helps create a more safe and orderly learning environment. Parent Patrol parents also act as resources for students; becoming additional “approachable” adults that students can go to whenever they need help resolving conflicts. In between passing periods, some Parent Patrol parents become resources for classroom teachers, acting as a classroom aide or assisting by tutoring small groups of students. Before serving in this capacity parents attend a Parent Patrol Orientation conducted by the Principal, James Joine! r, where they learn about the guidelines and procedures of the program, and techniques on how to best interact with students during transition times. Two Fall Creek valley Middle School parents, Shari Kassebaum and Patti Khamis, serve as coordinators, and manage the communication with and scheduling of parents. The program is in its 2nd year of existence and has 135 parents serving in this capacity. Denise Mabrey, a parent of a Fall Creek Valley Middle School 6th grader, had this to say about Parent Patrol, “I am on the Parent Patrol and I just wanted to let y! ou know or tell you thank you actually for this opportunity. It was so fun today and the kids were great. I had one incident and we discussed it with both kids and they both understood… I just wanted to let you know that this is the neatest thing. I wish they would have had this at (her child’s elementary school) … It was just a great opportunity and I’m going to be there every Friday in the AM …I hope more parents actually get involved because I think it will help the kids.
