Center Grove Pet Rescue

We’ve all seen them on television: The sad pictures of unwanted cats and dogs, followed by a heart-tugging request for donations. Sending money to help is good. However, adopting a pet is even better. Now, you can do that right here. The mission of Center Grove Pet Rescue & Orphanage (CGPR&O) is “Connecting People and Pets for the Mutual Enrichment of Life.” We visited this business near the intersection of State Road 135 and Stones Crossing Road to learn more.

Stephanie and Robert Morrison own a trio of business all in the same location. It started in 2006 with a dog grooming service. Then, last year they hired a veterinarian and developed their rescue service. While smaller than some other county facilities, since they opened last November they have placed over 50 cats and dogs. Their focus is on small- to medium-sized dogs and cats, generally keeping a selection of four to eight cats and about four dogs.

Most of the animals come from other shelters, such as those in Shelby and Morgan Counties. Since Center Grove Pet Rescue does not euthanize their animals, they are truly rescuing these adorable pets. Each is hand selected to be a good family pet.

Of course, they have irresistible kittens for adoption as well.

Adopting a cat or dog is not as simple as walking in and picking one out of a cage. Stephanie says they are as concerned about the home that the animal is going to as they are about the animal itself. They discuss the compatibility of the selected animal with any other pets that may be in the home. They require a contract stating that if the adoptive family is unable to keep the cat or dog for some reason that they return it to CGPR&O for placement with another family. The animal may not be given or sold to a third party, and the animal cannot be taken to a shelter. While the adoption fees are non-refundable, CGPR&O will reclaim the animal if the contract is not met.

As with any responsible pet shelter, your new pet will be spayed or neutered. We certainly don’t need more unwanted animals. CGPR&O also makes sure the animal has the first two rounds of vaccines and the required rabies shots.

You are always welcome at CGPR&O.

If you have a pet that you can no longer care for, CGPR&O is there to help. You can e-mail a picture of the animal you are trying to place to centergroveac@aol.com with “admittance application photo” as the subject line of the e-mail. Remember to include the name of the pet in the text of your e-mail so that they can quickly identify which picture goes with your admittance application.

If you are interested in adopting a pet, you can visit their PetFinder page, or call 317-535-8387. Pets are available for viewing Monday – Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday by appointment. CGPR&O is located just south of Smith Valley Road on the east side of State Road 135, just before Stones Crossing Road. The animal rescue is located inside the Center Grove Animal Clinic and behind U Dirty Dawg Grooming, Boarding & Doggie Daycare. Cg
