Lawrence Gov’t Closed Tuesday; Emergency Shelter Still Available

snowysunLawrence city government will remain closed Tuesday as the city and all of Central Indiana seek to recover from Sunday’s snow storm and endure deadly wind chills.
“Our city’s public safety, public works and utilities workers have performed admirably under extremely challenging circumstances over the last two days, and they will again be on duty to assist Lawrence residents,” Mayor Dean Jessup said. “But with Central Indiana expecting very low temperatures and dangerous wind chills on Tuesday, we want our other city workers – as well as our residents – to stay home, safe and warm.”
The snow emergency declared by Mayor Jessup Sunday afternoon remains in effect. That means city streets are closed to the public and only emergency responders may be on the streets. Motorists should not drive or park on city streets so that emergency responders and snow plows can get through.
The emergency shelter set up Sunday by the city will remain open for residents who lose electric power and heat, the mayor said. People in need of shelter are asked to call 317-501-9708 or 317-258-6294 to arrange to be picked up and taken to the shelter. About 20 people used the shelter Sunday.
Public safety workers – police, fire fighters and ambulance teams – will continue to respond to emergencies. Public works and utilities workers are staffing the city’s fleet of nine dump trucks, 10 pickup trucks with plows, two backhoes and a loader.
About a foot of snow fell on Central Indiana Sunday, followed by a plunge to sub-zero temperatures that are expected to hold through Tuesday.
