Longevity in an ever-changing industry like real estate can be hard to find. Peggy Deakyne began her career in the real estate profession in 1978 after working in banking.
I worked in the banking industry for 14 years, Peggy says. I only had one child, and I knew if I was going to be able to go to all of his events, I needed a job that wasnt a nine-to-five. I also wanted a job where if I worked hard, I would be rewarded. In the beginning I worked 70 hours a week, but it was 70 hours of my choosing.
Fast forward to 2009. Peggys daughter-in-law Jennifer Deakyne decided to pursue a career in the same industry.
I had been a stay-at-home mom for 11 years and when my youngest was in second grade I decided to jump back into the workplace, Jennifer says. “I had always found real estate interesting and had been around it a lot, married to Peggys son Gary. I thought it would be a perfect fit. I could be my own boss, make my own hours and still be there for my kids.
The two decided to join forces to create The Deakyne Team at F.C. Tucker.
It seemed like a no-brainer for us to join together as a team, Jennifer says.
They both feel that working together is easy for them, because they both stay in their lane.
In the beginning, I was around to help her with any questions she had, but shes a smart cookie, so she didnt have many, Peggy says of Jennifer. Now we each do our own thing, but are there to help the other one out if need be. I knew she would be great at this, but I also didnt want to push my career on her.
The Noblesville natives credit their knowledge of the local community for their success.
Thats why I love my job, Jennifer says. I can sell the place I love. Not only did my husband and I grow up here, but its where Ive chosen to raise my children. Maybe theyll choose to raise their kids here too.
Peggy notes that personal relationships and referrals are her most significant source of business.
We give a lot of personal attention to our clients, Peggy says. If theyre happy, they tell their friends. Thats what helped me be successful in this industry.
Jennifer also knows word of mouth creates big business in a booming industry.
I rarely work with clients that I dont know or that I dont have a personal connection with, Jennifer says. I rely on my relationships to build my business. To me thats so important in any business, but especially in real estate. It is a people business, and thats what I love about my job.
