A quick internet search will reveal a few common themes among popular New Year’s resolutions: Get healthy. Quit bad habits. Improve finances. Be purposeful about important relationships. And of course, organize living spaces so they are more functional.
For more than three decades, Mr. Storage in Plymouth has provided a little extra space to help people to conveniently organize their homes and garages with as few headaches as possible.
Ed Langfeldt is a lifelong resident of Plymouth, and has also been a small business owner all of his adult life. Before owning Mr. Storage, he drilled water wells. One of his most notable projects was developing the Windmill Park retirement community in Plymouth. When he was ready for something new, he and his wife Linda decided to build self-storage rental units.
“It looked like a good business early on,” he says. “I had no idea that it would boomerang to where it is now.”
He started Mr. Storage in 1985. At the time, there was only one other self-storage company in town.
“He really felt like self-storage was a thing the community needed.” explains Lisa Langfeldt, Ed’s daughter and partner.
For the Langfeldts, Mr. Storage represents an opportunity to help people “put the car back into the garage,” as Ed puts it.
“People run out of room at home,” Lisa says. “It’s convenient to rent a second garage space, and have access to it and know it’s secure. It’s headache-free.”
The Langfeldt family has benefitted from having a project that brings them together. Although Lisa is the only full-time employee besides Ed, her brothers Jim and Matt help out when they can. Two of Ed’s nephews, local tradesmen, also contract with Mr. Storage when excavating or doing concrete work.
“It’s nice because when we do new projects, we work with family members,” Lisa says. “That’s important to us.”
There are a wide variety of unit sizes available, from 4’x10’ up to 20’x30’, with 24/7 access. The units come with climate control or cold-storage options.
“With climate control, they have the option of having something that is humidity controlled,” Lisa says. “It’s secure and they can also store valuables.”
There are even outdoor options for boats and RVs. For those who aren’t sure about storage sizing, Mr. Storage also offers a storage size calculator on their website. The Langfeldts are always eager to help in person as well.
“A lot of times, when people are storing things they can’t get in their minds what their needs are, so they literally have to talk it through with somebody,” Lisa says.
Mr. Storage has seen substantial change through years. The business has expanded to 358 units that are spread over several locations in Plymouth, including one on Jefferson Street behind the Mr. Storage office, another on Oak Drive, and a third on Michigan Street. A fourth will open on Oak Drive in March. As they look to the future, the team hopes to expand into additional indoor storage for recreational vehicles.
“[People] spend a lot of money for their equipment, so they don’t want it sitting outside,” Ed says.
One part of the business that hasn’t changed throughout the years is old-fashioned, friendly service.
“They really appreciate having a person to deal with, versus kiosks and websites and that kind of thing,” Lisa says of the company’s customers.
The Langfeldts believe customized service sets them apart in the world of self-storage.
“Whenever you call a number and you get directed to an automated line, I think it has a totally different experience,” Lisa says. “From our standpoint it’s the only way we saw to do this business, in that someone could walk in and there would be a live person to help them.”
