Establishing a workout routine can be difficult, especially when schedules are busy and it feels like every new workout is complex with confusing equipment. However, the staff at F45 Training in Broad Ripple is all about getting back to the roots of athleticism and simplifying workout routines.

Alex McKinley, head coach and manager of the downtown and Broad Ripple locations, grew up being heavily involved in athletics. After trying F45 classes on the north side and consulting with the owner, McKinley helped open the Broad Ripple location in May of 2020.

McKinley explains that the “F” in F45 stands for “functional” and revolves around the movement involved in the workouts. F45 workouts have incorporated more than 6,000 different kinds of exercises and, as she says, “a lot of movements that translate into everyday life.” Each station has a circuit with screens members can refer to in order to follow along with the 45-minute classes. The high-energy, dynamic workouts are fun for coaches and members alike, and the sense of community is strong since each F45 location across the country offers the same sets of workouts daily.

McKinley enjoys the fact that workouts alternate between cardiovascular-heavy days – involving burpees, box jumps, ropes and more – and strength-training days that are slower and more focused, creating a challenging combination for members. She loves that F45 challenges members like athletes, but also provides a space for beginners to learn the movements safely and feel confident in their efforts.

The Broad Ripple location offers prospective members a free seven-day trial to truly experience everything F45 has to offer with the alternating classes. McKinley loves that coaches can provide one-on-one training instead of being far removed from activities in class as members move about the floor. She says the Broad Ripple location has a more residential feel than the downtown location, and has gained popularity. Members have told McKinley they’d been wanting a location in the area. She has pride in the fact that F45 is different from other fitness studios in the market, and finds it fun to work out with the community in a dynamic way. Members are encouraged by McKinley and her team, motivating them when it seems difficult to get a workout in, and providing accountability that can lead to lasting results and a healthy life.
