Dance Fit ClubAt some point every mom needs a break, no matter how much they love their children. Erin Johnson became a stay-at-home mom after a career as a teacher at Zionsville Middle School.

“I moved away from Zionsville in 2010 after marrying my Army husband, Kenny,” Johnson says. “We moved back here in 2015, and I would drive past the middle school crying because I used to be a teacher there. I was struggling with my identity. I missed serving my community.”

Johnson was also struggling to find workout classes that spoke to her.

“I created a mom’s Facebook group asking if anybody wanted to meet up with me,” Johnson says. “I was Zumba certified, and taught Zumba for four years before creating my class called Dance Fit. That first class was only five to 10 people, but it grew from there. Dance Fit with Erin was born. We were dancing but torching a ton of calories.”

Johnson utilized outdoor space or reserved indoor locations across the city to host classes.

“I was driving around with my girls one day looking for outdoor areas during the pandemic,” Johnson says. “We just happened upon an industrial area with a sign that said ‘Now Leasing.’ My daughter told me I should call.”

She called, but the space was already rented. Johnson felt it wasn’t meant to be, but then received a call letting her know the space was available.

“It’s a great space because it’s two units, and we have garage doors that can open for an open-air concept,” Johnson says. “We rebranded the business this summer to Dance Fit Club when we moved into our very first brick-and-mortar location.”

The fitness boutique offers dance fit classes, yoga, children’s classes, family classes and special events. The business even provides child care for those moms who can’t leave their kids at home.

“Our original class is dance fit, and it’s like a party,” says Johnson, a certified Zumba instructor. “Some of the classes use weights, so we’ll work with those in between songs. Now that we have all this space, we could branch out with our classes.”

Johnson’s infectious enthusiasm for fitness keeps her clients coming back.

“We have a couple of quotes on the wall here,” Johnson says. “They sum up what we’re about here. We work out because we love our bodies, not because we hate them. We try to ingrain in everyone that you’re enough – right now, the way you are. When you walk in our doors, we’re not here to change you. We’re here for mental clarity, friendship and community. The other thing we have written on the wall is, ‘You are worth it.’”

Johnson wants her clients to experience a mind shift when it comes to weight and exercise.

“Life isn’t just about a number on a scale or your pant size,” Johnson says. “As women, we tend to beat ourselves up so much. We don’t want anyone to feel like they’re only worthy when they hit a certain number on a scale.”

Dance Fit Club is located at 10830 Bennett Parkway, Suite B & C in Zionsville. For more information, call 317-344-3184 or visit instabio.cc/dancefitclubindy.
