Plymouth Family Dental Care Provides Personalized Service

As far as occupations go, few are more unique than dentistry – even within the world of health care. A person’s teeth can influence their confidence and the impression they make on others. Dental hygiene also affects a person’s health generally – perhaps more than many people realize – as the mouth is the entry point to other areas of the body like the digestive and respiratory systems. Because of this, the work of dentists is vital.

Dr. James Ryan, DDS, purchased Plymouth Family Dental Care from Dr. Chad Shaw, DDS, a little over a year ago. Ryan’s practice goes beyond cleanings, fillings and sealants, and includes oral cancer screenings and extractions among other services.

Growing up, Ryan wasn’t interested in becoming a dentist. As a young man he went into banking. The thought of dentistry never occurred to him until he was in his late 20s.

“I worked in a bank for a number of years, and I saw that things were changing and that maybe it would be better to go into something else,” he says.

That was in the 1980s. As he looked into options, the field of dentistry caught his eye.

After graduating from dental school at the University of Illinois more than 20 years ago, Ryan worked in dentist offices in small towns in Illinois and northwestern Indiana before moving to Plymouth.

For Ryan, who enjoys living and working in small-town America, his goal is to give people the smile they deserve by providing high-quality services for his patients, like dental reconstructions, cosmetic dentistry, implants and whitening.

“I like to help people,” he explains. “I’m very empathetic to a person’s needs.”

When Ryan accepts a new patient, the first visit is diagnostic to determine any issues or problems that patient may have.

“Usually the initial appointment is just an exam and X-rays, to see what needs to be done,” he says. “If it’s an emergency, of course we’ll try to take care of it immediately if we are able to.”

After the initial appointment, another will be scheduled for the patient accordingly.

One common issue dentists deal with is tooth discoloration, which can result from a nutrient-deficient diet and a generally unhealthy lifestyle. Teeth can become weak over time as well. As teeth become worn down, they can break or become misshapen. When Ryan has a client who deals with these kinds of problems, he will often apply a zirconium crown.

“[They] look more natural,” he explains.

Most insurance plans are accepted at Plymouth Family Dental Care, and financing for qualifying patients is available.

At the end of the day, Ryan’s primary goal is to give his patients a smile they can truly love.

“I like it when I feel like I’ve really helped somebody,” he says.
